Hey hey. Anyone out there using this?

Thinking of picking one up.

What do you like as evf?

Thanks.

Hi Mic,
I have got the Graticle HD, I like the good sharp image but you will experience a small lag when looking at fast moving objects, as you move your eye around the colour changes a little. Disappointingly I have found the unit to be a little unreliable, I have got burnt images on the sensor similar to an old tube camera, and it seems a few pixels are now not working. Zacuto advised me to turn the unit off between shots to avoid the burning issue, hardly practical in the world of TV production!
Cheers Richard

Oh wow, wild! Didn't know about the delay. Are you monitoring via HDMI or SDI when you are noticing the lag?

I have an Eye and also the Red EVF as well.

I'm not had the time to really compare, and because of the size i'm sticking with the Red EVF (also 1080p vs 720p). Having said that the Eye is an awesome EVF. But i'll have one for sale soon, so i'm bound to say that.

But give me a few days and i'll see if i can give you a real comparison.

thanks
Paul

Hi Brenden,
I always use the Graticle with BMC cables with either a Sony or Canon camera, the delay is very small and for most things not an issue. Usually filming anything with quick pans it shows up.
One thing worth saying is the unit is not water/dust proof in any way, the rubber covers for the Bnc/hdmi ports fall off and get lost. I have made a waterproof cover for mine that that still allows me to use the function buttons.
Its a difficult situation, there are very few Viewfinders on the market. I have got the Bomb I use on my Red, but Zacuto is the only real choice for the likes of C300/Fs7 etc.
The Canon EVF70 is able to fit either the C700 or the C300mk2 but I've not used it yet.
I have a 2/3 chip Panasonic camera about 8 years old its been hammered all over the world and the black and white viewfinder is utterly reliable, sharp and a joy to use.

I used to have the Gratical HD and found it operator-friendly and full of useful features. The size was a little bulky on some of my rigs, and without any real need for HDMI, I changed over to the Eye. Now I have the DSMC2 EVF, I tend to use the Eye for non-Red shoots. Helped out on an Amira shoot where I had Anamorphics and needed a desqueeze option.

I've found the Gratical range sharp and, if I have noticed a lag on fast pans, it's negligible and doesn't hinder my operation. I would have though most of the delay is down to processing out of the Red. I occasionally get "sweaty eye" syndrome and the anti-fog feature in these is great.

Compared to the HD, and apart from the smaller form factor with no HDMI, the Eye uses Lemo2 power which is more robust. I also imagine the 2nd rosette on the left side could be useful one day.

I am a fan of the gratical. The burn in mentioned by Richard Cook is a real problem with the gratical. I am on my second gratical because of this issue and will probably sell this one and pick up another. Aside from the burnin and the color shift I find the gratical a necessary accessory for all my cameras. except for the RED. I use the RED evf with my RED Epic.

Has anyone had an issue with color calibration on the gratical eye? Mine has a heavy color shift towards the red spectrum. Any feedback would be great. I have adjusted the display calibration to compensate but it is still pretty off.

Have had the gratical eye for about a year now. No issues whatsoever. If there's a color shift I haven't noticed it. (I use it with my Scarlet-x and will with my Scarletw when all the parts are in)

Tested the Gratical Eye on a Scarlet and noticed the shift towards red as well.

If you lean one way (angle eye) it goes away but thats, not the way I would want to use this.

I know this post is old, has there been any updates?

Yes, I'm also interested since I was thinking about picking one up. I'm looking for a nice, small EVF...
