"Given our unique position of enabling VOD day-and-date with theatrical, we wanted to test the market,'' Cuban said.

However, most theater operators, including the nation's largest circuits -- Regal, AMC and Cinemark -

-have been alarmed by Hollywood studios' plans to accelerate the early release of movies in the home through video-on-demand services.

They fear that such offerings will significantly undermine ticket sales.

Apparently youTube is preparing a service to let users view current Hollywood films on their computers - as a direct challenge to iTunes.

I find it a pity that both Apple and Google seems only interested in Hollywood, and not smaller, independent and/or international films. (And while I'm linking, here's an opinioned article about where the good films come from)

I really like http://theauteurs.com for international & contemporary online movie rentals. it's not a bad place for discovering new cinema. The site also doubles as a social networking service & has some really brilliant users. I realize this is significantly smaller than services like iTunes & now youtube, but at least it appears to be a starting point.

If you watched Jim Cameron and George Lucas the other day you would have heard them say that the theater experience is alive and well. With the advent of 4k projection in 3D the theater still has a social experience that the home theater will never replace no matter how big your room is. It's the group experience that makes the difference.

Unless of course your like Quentin Tarantino and you invite all your friends around to watch your collection of film prints in what is likely a custom built cinema.
