  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

YouTube To Offer 1080P Streaming Flash

Great for the quality! wonder what the bit rate will be 5 mbit? or 50 mbit?, however I don't like the banners youtube places on top of the video and would prefer it if they show ads under /besides / behind/ after but never over a video

Vimeo would just need to follow suit I guess or they might do one better, at least Vimeo has that cool desktop uploader now! Haven't used it yet but I saw the vid for it, got it downloaded just nothing to upload yet. Still... Vimeo always seemed to have the better looking quality videos...

YouTube just annoyed me with the 10 minute limit...

I've been having a lot of trouble with YouTube playing ANYTHING on many videos. They need to get their house in order before adding more load to their servers. It seems like 1/4 of the videos I try to see in the last 6 months just sit there buffering with nothing happening.

Youtube simply doesn`t process my full PAL videos properly. I tried each any every combination but the only thing that doesn`t destroy the image is half PAL resolution - with vimeo it always works perfectly.

I think just the quality (read: lack of) of the comments on youTube disqualifies it for any serious video distribution.

Vimeo have just announce that they'll start supporting the iPhone.

In the end it really depends who you want to reach with your video; i.e. if audience quantity is most important, have it on youTube. If peer review and video quality counts most, chose Vimeo. If control over the footage is paramount, host it yourself with a good flash player.

I've used the desktop uploader. It's pretty basic but the killer feature is the ability to pause and resume. I was uploading a video while my Internet connection was periodically dropping it. After about four hours of this I downloaded the desktop uploader and I was able to continue each time it dropped out. It would have been impossible without it!

Thats interesting ... especially as they recently switched to 2:1 aspect ratio and 1080p is not 2:1

Interesting. I find the lacking wncode wuality to be one of the bigger factors. I'm not sure more macroblocks in 1080 is going to make it better.

I wonder if the tiking of MS announcing 1080p movies via the Xbox influences this at all.

the MS instant adaptive streaming tech is very cool.

There are ads on the internet?

Here's a link to the first confirmed 1080p video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUM1284TqFc&fmt=37

It still shows up in a 720p window, but according to posts and my visual inspection, it definitely seems like its a step up in picture quality from their 720p videos.

EDIT: on a side note, be careful with opening the video. Flash isn't the best at handling the extra load. I tried replaying the video and FF died on me ( I'm running Win7 x64 on a Core i7 w/6GB of RAM )

why does most of these youtube videos have black borders? Never use to...now they do...surely they should get rid of those first! I've seen music videos on the universal page that are at the bottom of that huge black box, so much black around it, its rather annoying! Is it just my youtube or is it a general issue?

Like I said in an earlier post. Last month youtube switched to a 2:1 aspect ratio, presumable for film content delivery. 720p and 1080p will appear pillar boxed. 2.35:1 will appear letter boxed

I agree youtube need to get their 720p sorted before going 1080. Every time I watch a video in HD the sound goes out of sync!

Yeah saw that, was going to mention that but was hoping it wasn't. Its just the thought that it'd be a pain for most to go back and re-encode all their videos, basically referring to the large video groups like the music videos etc.

I might need to re-do some of our old stuff then *sighs*

I thought the black border was to improve contrast...

Why the hell video websites don't have grey backgrounds?!
