  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

YouTube 4K

Yet another proof that HD is not the format of the future.

Good Enough never is.

Tell that to the consumer market for televisions. True 1080p isn't always true, FullHD is used on TV's/monitors that aren't etc.

Two things need to happen before 4K could even become an option on a wide scale.

- Interlaced completely erased from the face of the earth.
and
- Nothing under true 1080p is sold in any stores.

Then there will be a demand for 4K and there will be products that comes out on a wide scale.

A supersized 4K TV is expensive today, but we might have a wall in any home that works as a display, producing landscapes and vistas, not only film and television.

Look at Total Recall from 1990, the wall Douglas Quaid has in his home.

There will be an explosion of 4K or higher in the future when the market realize that they will be used for other things then only film, tv and games.
Imagine a conferens with a 3D-wall, producing the illusion of being in the room with people from another location.
Film, TV and games is just in it's infancy.

Now if youtube would manage a decent download stream (which they can't even do for 1080p) and if everyone had a computer to play 4k decently AND then a affordable display to watch it on... then MAYBE it would make sense.

Does this mean it now supports every crappy resolution (240p, 360p, 480p) to the half-decent (720p, 1080p) to the good (2K, 4K)?
Well geez youtube, maybe you should ask the ones who actually know a damn about bringing 4K to the masses and ask RED how to get your streaming to a higher quality? Maybe that would actually, you know, turn this profitable?

Heck. . . I just tried to upload a simple 480p file and it looked so soft and fuzzy from their squeezing and processing I immediately deleted it. It looked horrible! 4K? What a bunch of hooey! The video looked 100% better on Facebook's video site!

YouTube - Now bringing crappy compression to 4K. Still, the lowest common denominator is now embracing the format.

4k looks worse than 1080p on a <4k display.

Youtube employs what appears to be nearest neighbor interpolation. All you get with 4k in YouTube is aliasing. No Thank You.

Good 1080p is better than crappy 4k.

Serious buzzkill man. If you don't understand the implications of what this may mean to delivery formats then don't put it down.

I think this is great. While it's not perfect you have to start somewhere.

release a 4k source and people complain "no affordable 4k monitors"

release affordable consumer 4k monitors people would camplain "its pointless there aren't any 4k sources"

I am tired of hearing all these people complain about this. Yes, 4k(ish) on Youtube isn't great right now. However, it's an excellent start in the movement towards 4k. This is YouTube's first attempt and while its anything but perfect now, give them some time to mature and for technology to improve and it will get better. It's a step in the right direction that I for one am happy YouTube has decided to take.

Lulz, I'm sure the "experts" at c.com will still tell you that 4K is "decades away".

Jim was right.

"a very high resolution that clocks in at 4096 x 3072" that's 4 x 3 just what I need for upressing all my old SD material!

Good 1080p is better than crappy 4k.

Yep.

Actually:

Good always beats crappy.

So...

Good 4k is better than crappy 1080 is also valid.

G
(Who have seen a lot of real crappy 1080 from a multitude of "full HD cameras" the last couple of months....)
