  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Your thoughts on how to replicate this shot.

Hello all, longtime reader, first time poster in this corner of the forums.

I'm being asked to replicate the "flipping shot" from this commercial - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBKzy01Xh8g - following the hand around its static position in frame. The director wants the shot to begin with us in POV, looking at the phone in location 1 - a burger joint - then follow the phone as it flips around for a selfie of our actress in location 2 - a rooftop bar - at which point friends join her in the selfie and camera pulls out to reveal the wider location.

I have my thoughts on how to do this, but of course, deeply bow to the collective experience of you folks here. I appreciate any insights.

Thanks,
JJ

First, carefully plan out the exact action for every transition to get as close a physical match as possible. Frame wide. For each transition, corner pin each outgoing and incoming phone. Align the shorts to match, put motion back in, fade across outgoing and incoming motions, composite outgoing and incoming.

I think its a mix of real locations and green screen. Some of the moves have a motion control look to them or a ton of frame by frame tracking and matching in post. Its a tricky one because the screens don't look like that in live action, reflections would be more extreme, brightness .. that is a big budget production.

I agree with Ted. I think there might even be some CG in there, Maya, or Cinema 4D.....definitely some compositing. You could also do a turn like that with a camera array rig of sorts....
