  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Your imput on MiniPrime choices

I'm sorry Lee but I have to completely disagree with this statement. There is a huge difference between 6mm and 8mm on a 2/3. Huge.

Fair enough, "interchangeable" was too strong of a word, they are different. What I'm saying is that I don't think switching between those focal lengths will give you the radically different character of, say, switching from a wide angle to a portrait/normal lens.

IE, if you're on a budget, mounting the 6 and taking three steps forward probably gets you a pretty similar shot to mounting the 8.

But if your budget is such that it's worthwhile to have both options, go for it!

Get the whole set if you can afford it but in all honesty, you can film everything pretty much with the 6, 16 and 25. The longest lens in the miniprime set is nice as well but I do not like the fact that it is much slower than the others. I am still trying to find out if the front of the miniprimes are threaded. Does anyone know? if so, what is thread size. I understand why full size cine lenses are not threaded (since not many companies make circular filters that large), but the barrels of the miniprimes are perfect for the use of circular filters and standard lens hoods, rather than full matte box set ups. The reason they are appealing is because of their small size. I would hate to puin that by placing a big box on the front of the lens. Unless red plans to build a mini matte box with mini filters (that would be very cool).

I have vacillated between the cinema and the fixed for months now. The driving point for me with the cinema has been the lens speed. With that incredibly fast glass, shallow DoF is going to be less restrictive on the cinema with the miniprimes. But then, I am really excited about the rack focus capabilities for the electronic lenses. The fixed will have this ability. Also, I cannot seem to find what the starting size of the fixed lens is (has that been announced?).

Since a lot of you are discussing the mini primes, how do you feel about these lens being manual?

I too have a lot of Canon glass, but I'd really not want to have to switch mount plates over and over to switch between the Canon and the mini primes. I know you all are concerned with this as well. Any solutions seen for that?

Thanks!

Rick, That question has been asked a lot (as I am sure you are aware) but I don't believe I have ever seen an official answer. The only specific I have seen is that it will be an 8X zoom. Logically, I have to believe it will start at about 6 or 8 mm. Personally I am not sure which I'd prefer as I like the relatively wide 6mm on the low end but wouldn't mind the 64 at the upper end. So far, though, they haven't asked for my opinion!!

All of this is only a guess on my part. Maybe we'll find out on the 15th of May?

True, very true. I've seen some people mention 7mm and that red has said they will have wide and tele converters for it. I wonder if we'll find out about those too.

oh I thought you meant aperture not focal length !

Haha! No, I'd seen that one multiple times. I've been doing a lot of serious though pertaining to aperature, focal length and native ISO sensitivity of the sensor in determining my path. Cinema or Fixed.

This more detailed discussion is happening here (since it's not about miniprimes persay)

I guess 7mm would be a nice happy medium! Roughs out to a nice 24-200 or so in the FF35 world.
