Virtual reality is already here.

I'm still picking up the pieces of my jaw.

Would love to see a discussion of us filmmakers about this. It's going to affect everything. Education, communication, research&design, planning... etc). Limitless possibilities.

PS: watch the other video samples from this dude. Totally worth it.

Thats pretty damn cool!

I shot a series of ads for Sony and their Augmented reality applications and interactive media with movie posters and games and the Vice President said to me, "In the near future everyone will be wearing Augmented reality glasses at a theater and become a part or a character in the film actually manipulating the storyline." That blew my mind to think about but honestly, we're getting really close to that reality.

Amazing tech indeed.

In regards to 3D - As some one who is legally blind in one eye I would say 3D isn't the most important aspect. I have no depth perception but I can still perceive 2D virtual reality. I can only imagine how amazing it must be to see good 3D, but I don't think it's the be all end all ;)

After working side by side with Douglas Trumbull - I can say without question that 4K & beyond resolutions + Ultra highframe rates (120fps) + vivid color/ light is an integral part to turning a screen into a window onto reality. It truly is magnificent... and from everyone that has seen it in 3D is that much more blown away. This technology is right up Doug's alley. He wants to put the viewer into an action/ adventure Sci-if movie. The objective is not to replace classic cinema movies...it's just another fun entertainment option like a live broadway theater, cirque du soleil, Back to the Future Ride (Alltime favorite!!!).

Ever since I was a little kid I always dreamed of a day where we would have true virtual reality - where it was impossible to vusialiy discern from reality. Makes me think of Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress where the kid is playing a virtual reality game in the future. That along with BTTF is my all-time favorite exhibit/ ride. Call me a dreamer baby!

indeed very amazing, thanks for sharing.

I can't wait to see how all of that 'empty' augmented reality space is going to be filled with stupid advertising. Selling virtual space is the next marketing leap

Mo-cap, games, interactive movies... Next step is The Matrix, moving in virtual space only with brain's activity, one step after that is to connect virtual reality directly into brain, overriding all the body senses. "Pray. End is nigh!".

Some people have been calling the Rift headset evolutionary and downplaying it's importance, but as the first kit to provide both the wide view angle as well as fast accurate motion tracking I think it's really going to be a revolutionary tech. It's going to be (along with the clones it's sure to spawn) the prime enabler for a series of large steps forward in immersive entertainment (on the delivery end). Initially I see it combining with some of the new high end 3d scene and motion capture technologies to really change gaming at least... and likely other entertainment also. Who knows... in 10 years we may have "Theaters" where we sit down and put on a headset... when the movie starts we're dropped into the scene and are given the ability to pick our own location, wander around Bags End and look at the flowers on the window sill as Bilbo sits on the front stoop smoking and talking to himself.

On the scientific front, this technology will give humans the ability to view things at other scales (nanometers, light years) in a very naturally interactive way... I can only imagine what sort of impact it could have on spatial understanding of things that right now are hard to get our minds around (protein folding for instance) when we can REALLY visualize the subject matter as though it was in the room with us.

Very cool tech indeed.
