  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

You are told you MUST mount on-camera for sound... do you MKH-416, 3D Mic Pro, or ???

I recently had a cable made for the rode video (mounted to the camera) mic that takes the male stereo 1/8" and split it to left and right mono 1/8 for the front inputs on the Epic body. I like this set up for simple handheld behind the scenes type audio, the resulting stereo recording in camera sounds pretty good. I also had cables made to go directly from the Lectrosonics receiver (strapped to the camera) to the front inputs of the Epic for better mic set ups that are also wireless. I found that there are lots of specific cabes that just don't exist yet, or at least I couldn't find them easily.

Thanks for the advice Mark.

I recently had a cable made for the rode video (mounted to the camera) mic that takes the male stereo 1/8" and split it to left and right mono 1/8 for the front inputs on the Epic body.

I was looking for a website that stock this cable and the best I came across was http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/audio/MSA1.htm. This site allows you to create the cable of your choice, which in my book is pretty handy.

Based on your advise it seems I can create the cable you suggested. Using the above web link are you able to verify the specs needed to create the cable you suggest?

I assume its either the 1/8 TRS Male to 2 x 1/8 TS Male or 1/8 TS Male to 2 x 1/8 TS Male. I'm unsure of the difference between the TRS and TS however and not sure what result this would have on the Epic. Are you able to assist?

Also, what length would you suggest if this cable is the correct one to make?

Thanks!

Dave,

The cable which is only about 8" long in my case, is female TRS stereo (the standard rode video mic stereo male plugs into it) splitting to two male TRS 1/8. I believe the wiring is the tricky part, I want to say the two male jacks are are +-neutral, and obviously not TRS stereo. But you'll want to check with Red or an Audio expert to be sure. I just told them what I needed and the cable guys, Performance Audio in Utah in this case, did their magic. Sorry I'm not an expert here.

Thanks Mark. I've raised a support ticket with Red, thanks to some advice from Dan, so I'll let you know what they advise.

Dave,

My set-up for scratch audio consists of:

- Sennheiser MKE 400 (small and lightweight DSLR mike, imo: very decent for voices/language audibility)
- custom made short Y cable that splits the signal to record via the front inputs with left and right channels leveled about 15dBs apart.
- cold shoe mounted on a small aluminium bar, attached to the top of the brain, so the mike's tip is just sticking over the edge of the mattebox (far away from the airblow).
- scarlet fan settings 35%/35% = temp staying at around 62°C

Here's the thread for the correct cable:

Any sound/camera technician at your local rental house can make it for you.

Unexpensive and works fine for me as a reference sound.

Cheers!

I got a response from the technical team at Red.

They said: "We haven't done this before (split a 1/8" male stereo into two mono connectors) but it looks like this should work as long as the signals are passed to the proper locations when split: 1 - Sleeve, 2- Tip, 3 - Ring."

So i'll give it a go when my rig is all set up and report back.

If any of you have that gear handy feel free to give it a go and report back and let us know what you found.

Or you could use your Rode stereo videomic pro with an femal stereo to male mono adapter.... Shouldn't this work?
You get sound in mono and double it in nle soft to balance stereo

I have tested the audio on my Scarlet and I didn't like the way it sounded at all. I would not record anything but scratch audio to my Scarlet. Perhaps it's a defective one.

I've been using my 416 on my Epic and it sounds good. Fan is set at 35% and is not intrusive. I will try this dual input scheme as I like having two audio input levels from the same mic - hdr audio.
