Hey guys,

I recently shot a film on the epic and noticed some crazy yellow skin tones. I shot all interior stuff at 3200K... 180 degree shutter 23.98fps. I'm wondering if it's a makeup issue or some setting in the camera that I'm missing.

Anyone ever ran into this before?

Thanks!

If you look at the hair in this one you will see that it isn't just skin tones you are having a problem with.

The yellow areas in the hair are apparently consistent in the other angle:

The shadows here are telling. Look at the shadows of the plumbing in the right of the frame. There are two shadows there; one cool and one very yellow, like the splotches in the skin and hair. It appears the yellow is from one of your light sources.

yeah, it does kinda look like something is going on with the blue channel. did this happen with every shot? what level of compression were you using?

It looks like a bit of color manipulation was done. Maybe there is a hanky secondary qualifier in there.

R3d's and some moving footage might help.

Some types of makeup react badly with certain lighting, but it looks like there's a lot of yellow and/or green caste from somewhere. Colorist and power windows is your best bet.

There is a colorist around here, who has saturated RED and blue heavily, that paired with a few other things.

My guess is that R3Ds will not look really bad...

I'd recommend resetting your look and setting a proper white balance. Looks like the colors are over saturated and the white balance looks way off.

It looks like someone did a bad skin qualifier but not sure if that is the case.

Someone took your shots, qualified the skin-tones, inverted the matte and made the remaining colours look strongly bluish. Because blue is the complementary colour to yellow the skin-tones are perceived to be over-saturated and yellowish. Give them back some coldish tint that matches the environment better and all is fine. No Red-realated issue but bad grading.

Yup, looks like a post issue. This can happen for a number of reasons in a coloring process.
Original material is likely fine.

The Rec709 color decoder setting from years back always did this. I've seen this over and over, it's a very old problem back to 2008. Maybe it got fixed in later versions of the SDK, and somebody's using old software.

There was even a time when the Red One would output a live image like this (Build 3-14 days?). I had a director notice it while shooting, I had to talk him off the ledge and remind him about raw. It was always the same. Honky yellow green in hair (especially blondes), and yellow patches in skin.

Tell the colorist to use the latest Redgamma and Redcolor decoding settings.

I'm on the road and don't have access to the R3D's but I remember even when looking at the RAW's in Recine, I could see the yellow cast. The compression I was using was 7:1.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Lots of things could be happening here. If you were seeing it directly on the camera footage, then it was probably a combination of lighting and look settings on the camera. If you ever do get to post an R3D, I'm sure we'll be able to tell more. Looks like a yellow/blue push and shouldn't be too difficult to fix. Remember, this is RAW, you can make it look however you want.

I think Scott might be correct. It might be one of your light sources. Notice the shadow from the pipe on the wall on the right side of that frame looks yellow. So when the other light source is blocked, the yellow from the other light source is the only source hitting the wall at that spot and it's more yellow. What king of lights were you using? Any gels? I'm thinking it's less likely a color correction thing because the yellowish doesn't seem to pair with certain exposures (shadows, mids or highlights).

May I ask what lenses? I had a similar issue using a Tamron lens. Not saying you were using a Tamron, but as saturation goes up, so does the glasses inherent artifacts (yellow blotches might be one of them.)

Similarly, are you sure it was set to 3200k, or are you saying the light sources were supposed to be rated at 3200k (Were they LEDs? Was the whitebalance set to something OTHER than 3200k in RCXp?) In my experience, things tend to get wonky with whitebalancing below 2800k; you have to desaturate to get a more consistent image.

I've seen this before with CameraRGB before. To add one more chime to the chorus, I would look at a vanilla Redcolor3 output.
