Xsan is now built into Lion server as well as the Lion client, which means you no longer have to spend $999 per seat, plus two for the servers, to run Xsan. That changes the economics dramatically. Plus, with Promise's upcoming SANLink Thunderbolt to Fibre Channel adapter you'll be able to connect any Thunderbolt-equipped Mac to an Xsan network. It's looking like Apple hasn't abandoned the Enterprise and video production storage spaces after all. They're just doing it their own way. Very interesting...

Has anyone confirmed that the software is also licensed? Does it just come packaged with Lion or is it free?

Andrae,

If I follow your question correctly, here is copy from Apple's site on Xsan:

"The Xsan file system is built into OS X Lion, allowing any Mac with appropriate connectivity to access an Xsan volume. Lion Server includes the Xsan Admin application for hosting and configuring Xsan volumes." http://www.apple.com/macosx/server/features/

Also, the Xsan 2 Administrator Guide for Xsan v2.3 contains this comment: "Xsan 2.3: The Xsan file system is built into Mac OS X Lion. Any Mac that has Lion and the requisite Ethernet and Fibre Channel connections can access Xsan volumes."

You can view/download the Xsan v2.3 Admin Guide (PDF) here: http://images.apple.com/macosx/server/docs/Xsan_2_Admin_Guide_v2.3.pdf
