Somebody can tell me what are the XML and ALE format?

The RedCine should save files in XML format but I can't find this option, I can only save the transcoded files into a QuickTime DNxHD file (Avid load it without problem), but why I should use the XML format? =\ I need to download a codec?

XML is the metadata from the R3D files that is converted into ALE which is the Avid Log Exchange format for metadata. The steps for this are described in the Step by Step Guide at www.avid.com/red and the XML conversion files are there on the third party tools tab.

You need the metadata in case you ever want to get back to the R3D files, or online elsewhere at 2K, 4K, etc.

Thank you for the answer! :) I succeed to transcode in XML! Avid load the XML files without problems. If I want to get back to the R3D files I need to convert the XML in ALE, that's right? Can you tell me the benefit of getting back to the R3D files?

Moreover, can you tell me the difference between a .mov and a .xml? The file size it's the same and Avid loads both kind of files. Onestly I would edit with a .mov format, that's a bad choice?

Wrong post.
sorry

XML is a language to describe metadata. .mov is a QuickTime movie file that can either be embedded or referenced to other media. The codec describes the "essence" of the actual media or sound with the QuickTime wrapper.

With your workflow you are creating a QUickTime that holds Avid DNXHD essence (media) whose metada as extracted from REDcine is described as XML.

Do you think it'ìs better to edit with a .mov or a .xml?

I think you are still confusing the two - picture and sound are in the .mov file which is imported into the Avid Media Composer for editing. The XML carries the file name, timecode, etc. which can be used to go back to the original R3D files if needed. In order to have both the metadata (timecode, etc.) and the picture and sound for editing you need both. How you combine for Avid is outlined in the Step by Step Guide on www.avid.com/red

Have you read that yet?
