  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So, with the official launch of the new Mac Pro cylinder and FCP X all set, next month's X Pro meeting looks like it's going to be a blast!

At our January 18th, 2014, meeting we'll be demoing the new MacPro cylinder running Mavericks, Final Cut Pro X, Logic Pro X and DaVinci Resolve 10 all playing 4K footage off the new Promise Thunderbolt 2 RAID ... will be an amazing combination of hardware and software.

Very good point, Sulekh .. will get a beta version of Express Dailies up and running and see how it goes .... nMP is going to be a killer DIT machine for processing digital dailies with ColorFront, Resolve LIVE or FCP X ... am thinking that we'll have the Quad core on the DIT stations and the 8 core in editorial and maybe the 12 core in final color and finishing ... I know that from the some of the benchmark testing that's already been done that the apps that have been optimized for Open CL on the new ATI GPUs are really going to fly!

Be also great to see it running 4K monitors.

Over the last thirty years I've been a strong advocate of the power of Moore's Law in driving forward the tremendous gains we've seen in the digital revolution ... i think tomorrow, Apple is going to move the goal posts a significant distance from where they currently are.

The combination of the new hardware architecture with 64 bit OSX and 64 bit apps like FCP X and DaVinci Resolve really is a game changer in the digital content creation industry ... from 4K camera to 4K screen, the new Apple platform is going be one of the key enablers in the new era of 4K workflow.

Final Cut Pro 10.1 is now available for download and its a free update if you already bought 10 , also compressor 4.1

So, hopefully by now you will have ordered your spiffing new Mac Pro tower and upgraded to FCP X 10.1, Compressor 4.1 and Motion 51. ... you should also have upgraded your OSX to Mavericks.

As you will see once you've played with this new combination this really is a significant upgrade from Apple (all totally free upgrades from the App Store) ... and yes, the User Interface on FCP X has changed a little but it's not too hard to think in terms of Libraries now ... most of the features under the UI are still the same but the app has been fine tuned with greatly improved media management and performance gains.

For the Pro market there are also some new workflows built around the Library approach to media management which bring FCP X up to a pro level of usability.

We'll be going into an in-depth overview of the new features at our X Pro meeting on Saturday Jan 18th starting at 10am sharp.

And for those of your interested in using FCP X10.1 in a multi-user environment with several editors accessing the same shared storage at the same time I'll be showing you how to integrate FCP X 10.1 into Xsan 3 running on Mavericks and new Mac Pro tower ... awesome combination in terms of speed and efficiency!

And don't forget that if you haven't used FCP X before but have used iMovie 2013 you might find certain similarities between the two apps (cough, cough).

We'll be covering some of the tips in our Jan 18th meeting but if you're serious about learning 10.1 over Christmas, you should read this first.

Hey Neil, I know I saw you mention this possibility before, but, if you record the meeting/presentation, I'll watch it. 100%. But living in Boston, it's kinda hard to get out to LA for an event . . . heh.

So yeah, hope you're able to record it. I'm really excited for the possibilities of the new FCPX and the new hardware.
 
Would been fun to give it a go but i dont want to mess with hackintosh and my macpro is to old. Perhaps get an macbook pro and try it next year. Have fun!

Nick, I think we'll give it a go and record the session both on ScreenFlow and on camera and then cut something together ... will let you know once i suss out the logistics ... one of the things I want to demo is FCP X 10.1 running over XSAN 3 using two different Mac Pros ... will do some testing and let you know.

Hope you're enjoying the winter in Boston ..... I lived in Boston for year during the 90's ... wow, the winter was chilly (even compared to winters in England) ... now I live in LA and complain when it gets really "cold" and gets down under 50F ... still nice to be able to walk around in your shorts and T-shirt in the "winter".

I haven't used FCPX since version 1, so excuse me if this is a silly question - but I'm wondering if there is a way for multiple projects that are sharing the same footage to share the same keywords. Would a template project need to be made or is there some other method?

Interesting question, Mark ... there's actually two ways of approaching the answer and they kind of reflect how much FCP X has changed over the intervening 26 months since you first tried FCP X. The new version 10.1 has come a long way since the initial launch and I highly recommend that you download the free 30 day trial version and have a play around on a small project just to see how much it's evolved.

One way of answering your question is to say that in the new version (and I have to stress that 10.1 is quite a bit different to previous versions) you can easily share KeyWords between different Projects by simply creating those Projects within the same Library. All the shared media will contain the same set of KeyWords and MetaData - nothing else to do.

However, if you want to create separate Libraries with the different Projects within each Library here's a step-by-step guide created by our editing guru, Bora Kim, which goes through the process of exporting and importing XML files between Projects ... quite simple really!

1. Select the Event you would like to duplicate. Then go to File → Export Event XML:

Thanks for the detailed answer! With the new Mac Pro I'm starting to think that a switch to FCPX for editing would be a good idea. I really liked it when I tried it at first - I edited one commercial with it to try it out in a real world situation, but it just wasn't quite ready.

Are you finding on this latest version that you feel advantage of additional processors all the time or just when using certain effects? For example with AE for what I do normally the additional processors don't really help until we BG Render. But FCPX is a very different creature
