  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So Redcine, RedAlert, Clipfinder, RedRushes...
nothing exports anything all of a sudden (or for the last week, I guess). I've been re-downloading old and new versions, I can't update my proxies, I can't export quicktimes...
It's like some kind of Mercury retrograde bullshit. I'm actually trying to work on my own demo reel and not being able to implement all the RSX changes I've made to every one of the damn 140 clips is really driving me nuts.

Has anyone else ever been through this?

Last night I used Crimson to REDcine, and this morning I had a counter saying how many thousand frames failed to export: all of them. For the last three days I've been installing various number versions of REDAlert- I can make RSX's all day long (in fact I have been), but can't make a single QT. All day yesterday and again today I tried Clipfinder (which seems like a great program, I don't think it's CF's fault) to no avail either. Clipfinder goes through it's render time in less than a minute and leaves absolutely nothing in the export folder I set.

Somehow it would seem that the underlying structure of how RED is handled has gone bad on my computer. Is there a program or setting somewhere I don't know about that could have gone south and needs fixing?

At first I thought it was a bug with the v.20 REDrushes, but I guess these boards would be full if any of you all were going through what I am right now. Last night I was so happy to get an email from Red about a new version- thought my problems were over. Nope.

I'd love any words of guidance, if you know any. Many thanks,

Can you try reinstalling with the latest version (v20.1.2)?

In most cases, the symptoms you describe are caused by "unusual characters" (umlauts, accented characters, etc.) in the file path to the R3Ds.

If that does not get you any further, let me know.

Cheers,
Hans

Thanks for the quick interest!
I did download 20.1 last night, and fiddled with it till about 4am, went throough the whole routine.
I never rename my files, and I've been careful to keep everything in a proper directory. These shots are culled from the last nine months I've owned the RED, they come from many different drives and LTO tapes. I started with a brand new G-Tech Raid by copying entire folders over I might want to use. I edited in FCP using H proxies. First thing I noticed was that REDAlert wouldn't make updated quicktimes from my RSXs, but I feel like this happens from time to time. One peculiar thing though, was that some of my footage came from a second camera that didn't have the 'make quicktimes' function on. For these I could not make any quicktimes at all! Those were for a client who's right down the street so I just got them from him, having only the week before shown him how to makie all wrappers using REDRushes on my machine. Now, none of that works anymore.
Then v.20 came out and I tried that- same thing.
I thought maybe it could be a hardware problem- the fact that I have a brand new harddrive in the mix- maybe it's a lemon? But I tried making QTs in the root folders on other drives, too.

I may be haunted by spirits or bad electricity or something: two weeks ago my G5 stopped working, followed by my Qunatum LTO3a not letting me log in- both of which have had to go to the shop.

Hans- cool program- thanks for making it available, I only just discovered it during this new issue- but all the same- amazing!

Denan- obvious accolades to you and the RED gang as well

thanks for any tips

Thanks. Are you able to render out any transcoded QTs?

I can use the proxies that I have from camera, or that I made using an RSX previous to this new problem, from Final Cut, but by no other means do I know of. REDcine failed to export every single frame, RedRushes, REDAlert and Clipfinder made no new QTs.

Is the new release of REDAlert integral to REDCine, as well? Could my machine be somehow rejecting it?

Inside RA, when you render, can you try "render in terminal" and see if it says anything odd?

It doesn't say anything odd, it asks me to choose a folder, I choose a folder, then I click 'render' from the main tab and REDAlert 'Unexpectedly Quits'

Try "render in terminal" down at the bottom of the render window.

Can you email me the crash report also?
It should be under /library/logs/crashreporter or in your home directory under library/logs/crashreporter. You should see a redalertxxxx.crash or one for redline.

OK
got it worked down to a hardware issue and the good folks at G-Tech sent me a new drive overnight. There was some kind of screwy mojo in that thing that disabled my computer when it was merely plugged in.

At the same time I'd been experiencing a little bug in Crimson due to my updated REDCine, which I also discovered was a problem already answered.

Thanks Denan, thanks Hans
Sorry 'bout the confusion. Still wondering why RA files look so much different in FCP... but with REDCine back on my side, not too worried.
