Hi All,

I just woke up to a nightmare!:angry01:

Software updated to latest OS and did a FINAL CUT update as well over night.... STOP!!

FINAL CUT PRO does not let you have HIGH video playback anymore, The (h) 2k proxies can only play in medium res playback. WE ARE ALL SCREWED
One of my and my clients best loves was to watch what we shot in 2k FULL RES GLORY!!. (rendered of course)
Seeing our glorious RED FOOTAGE for all it's worth in the FCP time line using HIGH MODE play black was a joy to behold.
Now we are stuck with medium res play back only. blurry shit!!!!!:ranting2:

For the life of me i can't understand why APPLE have done this to us all.
One day perfect , next day crap!
Please RED / APPLE, please find a way to get HIGH Play back function back to us. Its one of the only ways we get to see RED footage in its true sharpest and best way in FCP.
My clients think its soft!... and they are right, in medium mode your only seeing half resolution. High mode setting is history, greyed out.. (see jpg)

It's so upsetting.
Mr J annard, please throw your weight around, please let us have SHARP IMAGES again in our time lines. You must be able to get Apple to do something about this.

The big corporations will not let you make 'blockbuster like' movies with a indie budget. can't fight them directly, fight them indirectly. can't stop 4k RAW camera, just 'CUT' the monitoring option. Good strategy anyway.

wich update are speaking about? When I run my update software, nothing is happening : no update for final cut or OS X. I m actually on OS 10.5.4 and final cut 6.04. Give us more info about this update please. I dont think 10.5.5 is already avalable?

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

They are not out to get you. It's going to be machine/operator/apple programmer error.

BigT, that was not directed at you. Rollback is going to be a far better option. Roll back fcp updates using pacifist - not trying to teach a grandmother to suck eggs.

can you roll back update?

Haven't tried...
But for the life of me I can't understand why they would stop you from having your 2k proxies in playback in HIGH res video playback anymore.
Its one of the only reasons I decided to use FCP an the other to view RED footage at it's best.

I so wish I could stick my foot up the persons arse responsible for this, my foot would end up near his teeth, F%$#%K I'm so pissed off!!

Ive been raving to my current client for weeks about how sharp and dynamic RED footage is, but now I'm playing the edit to him and it looks soft, cause the max I can get it to playback is in MEDIUM!!! no HIGH setting there anymore to click on.
I've got to render the thing out to PRO RES and watch it in a bloody Quick time window!

Dick heads.

Same ... OS 10.5.4 and final cut 6.04.

We just did another edit suite and the same thing has happened, HIGH video playback has greyed out....
If its a 1k sequence time line, high mode comes back?

got me stumped!

In my various readings of FCP forums I've seen a few weird and seemingly unrelated reasons suggested for 'High' quality playback being disabled. Like software things outside of FCP entirely.

More tangible suggestions on another forum (that I can't link) include:
- Remove and reseat your RAM
- Ensure matched RAM pairings (ie. all RAM modules are same size)

And I can't find it now, but I'm sure I saw someone with a similar problem resolve it by moving the display card from one slot to another in the computer.

If you have to use FCP, do this: have 2 installs of Mac OS, 2 installs of FCP.

partition A: current version FCP, OS X
partition B: prev version FCP, OS X

When you do an update, you do it to partition B. Partition A then becomes your backup.

Also, bear in mind that Apple is particularly bad in this regard. Not industry standard.

Just contact Apple support and tell them your problem - normally they are very helpful and know a lot. As a FCP user you should get support easly.

Go into your sequence settings and change "Apple ProRes" to "Redcode" this fixed it for me and i got "High" back in the Playback Video Tab.

Make sure your sequence is the same settings as your material, if it still not work, then it's probably quicktime update that have a poor hair day. If nothing works, your can "hack" an old quicktime installer and force install an old version.

A thing to consider could be the fact that they upgraded the "minimum requirements" to run the high quality mode. These estimates are made from evaluations of how well current hardware performs under a certain load. Every time an upgrade happens there can be additional requirements which are really subtle but could never the less push your hardware over the "virtual edge".

It could be how well your disks perform or as suggested earlier a ram issue. Even though my 20TB RAID is very fast, when it gets filled more than 70%, performance suffers a lot. This alone could be an issue, especially if FCP did a new hardware profile of your machine after it was upgraded.

But regardless, it's actually more like playing it safe than what actually is possible with your current hardware.
When Apple upgrades their OS, they always make a lowest common denominator minimum and anything lower than that will not upgrade. Yet people with too much time on their hands and a healthy portion of spite usually creates a workaround and get the new OS running on machines which according to Apple shouldn't be. So there could be a load of explanations to the why, the only thing you can't do is lose your head (like I never do that)

I second the idea of calling Apple, even though I've had a few probs with their support, at least there's a starting point. If they can't fix your problem, THEN you get to call them names :)

For what it's worth I have FCP 6.0.4 and OSX 10.5.4 and I have the option of High quality playback. The problem is I don't get any sort of realtime playback. No where near it. Stops after a few frames with the dropped frames warning. 8 core, 2.8 Ghz machine. 3 internal striped discs getting roughly 200mb/sec read and write on the AJA system test and no cigar. Any ideas? Should I expect to get real time playback of _H proxies on this machine in others experience? Perhaps the disc speed isn't sufficient?

with the new early 2008 macpro machines it is VERY important that your RAM is configured in the right way : 2x 1GB is NOT ok, you need 4 or 8 modules of the same size of RAM, for example 4 modules of 1Gb or 4 modules of 2 GB, and with 4 modules total, put 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom memoryslot. i had to find this the hard way, until later Apple confirmed this with this technote : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1957?viewlocale=en_US

YEEE HAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

I'M BACK FROM THE DEAD!!!!

Called APPLE, got an engineer (in about 30 seconds) Told me to clear my FCP preferences, problem gone... stupid things is, I should have done this yesterday, but thought it was an OS update / upgrade problem. :whistling:
My faith in mankind (APPLE) has been restored.

For the record. A PUBLC SORRY to APPLE for hammering them in this forum . Service was great!, Problem fixed in less than 2 minutes flat!
Life is back to normal. Thank goodness.

Here's a bit of a hint for all FCP punters. After deleting my old FCP preferences, FINAL CUT has now never run better, smoother, cleaner on RED, actually in any format for that matter.
Maybe it's just the little service that we should all adopt every few months.

Thanks to everyone that replied with a possible solution. All helped. Thanks.

ooooh and to Bruce Allen... FCP is an industry standard, geeez mate. How many award winning movies and thousands more TVC's have to be created in FCP for you to realize that it over took AVID about 2 years ago as preferred tool of the masses.
I'm X AVID. Great tool, that just fell behind is all.
aaaaaaand NO! I'm not going to get into an AVID /FCP fight. Both are great tools and both can survive in one world. But at this point in time only FCP cuts RED QT proxies (FACT) and that's why I'm going to hang with FCP till AVID get there foot out of there mouth and get there edit program moving to the same speed as FCP.
Hopefully wont be long....

Hey Mark,

You might want to give FCP Rescue 6 a try ... it allows you to backup, delete and restore FCP preferences. It is a free download from fcprescue.andersholck.com

It might come in hand sometime.

Cheers,

Jonas
