I had several Leica R lenses serviced at Steve's Camera in LA for that same issue and they did a fantastic job. They were recommended to me by Matt Duclos. They do what's called a CLA (Clean, Lube, Adjust) where they disassemble the lens, clean, re-lube and make sure everything's up to snuff for about $275.00.

I then had them send the lens to Duclose for come-mod.

Highly recommend.

Mark, mine went the same route... Steve's to Duclos and back. Perhaps I should send them back to Steve's to see if they can loosen up the focus more...

Hi I have a Leica 80mm/1.4 as well, and do find its focusing mechanism quite stiff. I had a CLA done by Youxin Ye (another recommended Leica tech), and his response was: "For R lens, yes since the focus helical is very long. I checked it, there is no grease aging problem in the helical." Also, from reading the net, it seems like it might have also been by design to have the focus ring have a bit more resistance in it.... That said, mine is quite a bit more stiff than say, my 19/2.8 ii.

Christopher I'm wondering if you ever got your 80mm serviced? Can any other 80mm lux owner give their two cents?
