Yeah it's a very interesting lens. One of the RARE telephotos that has a FLOATING ELEMENT (found more commonly in high end wide angles, like the 28 f2 "Hollywood" and the 35 1.4). The floating element is there to give this lens improved CLOSE FOCUSING ability.

Makes me wonder if this lens was designed with portraits in mind....

I mean most 180's are a 2.8

You can get 200 f2's, but those are in a whole other league. Usually $5k and up (even for stills lenses).
