Hi there!

i need to buy a small but effective light set for my feature film. i know its very complicated to answer such an open question like this. my film is scope Red one mx black and white. mostly day time scenes, natural light and such, but there are some few night scenes, some wide open lenses, but im focused in two or three characters into the scene. here in brazil i have the option, not a good one for my style, that is to rent old fresnel lights, and keep on doing like the old guys. here we dont have a lot of good new things like HMI or LED panels. So im thinking in buying some while im in LA next month.

What you people suggest? ive heard about the zylight and lite panels, so i was thinking if this is any good for the kind of small production im running and if it's possible to buy a good set of those lights with less than 10k.

THANKS!

Daniel

mostly day time scenes

So these are interior or daytime exteriors? Don't think LEDs will help you much outside.

Either way.. you may want to invest in some shiny boards for sure if you have not already. I'm sure
a few of those along with the toasty Brazilian sun will provide much more "oomph" than
any $10,000 worth of HMIs can by.

You may also be able to find some used globe style ARRI 1200w HMIs for a good price. We sold
a set to someone in Brazil years ago because they said the bulbs were easy to find there..but
that may or may not be true.

Unfortunately any big HMI guns will eat up your 10,000 instantly... an you will have to crate it
and ship it back.

Sorry. mostly interior day. when exterior im gonna go with the light reflectors for sure.

do you have some advice about using LED? i mean for interiors

LEDs are rather expensive yet for the output. I would go with several used Divas or 4 banks, and a few Jokers or other small (800/575w) used HMIs if you can afford it.
I am not a gaffer or DP, but I think most would agree that a really nice kit can be made out of a mixture of soft Kino sources and hard HMIs.
