i bought an arri sliding baseplate from isreal, after they shipped it i asked, oh btw is it 15 or 19mm rods, and they said panavision size 17mm! ive never heard of this and cant find any rods that size for sale, maybe i need a 2mm spacer in there or something, but if anyone has any 17mm rods or clamps id be interested in purchasing obviously and id love opinions on this 17mm, or some insight. thank you!

Yup. Panavison uses their own rod size, not metric. Nothing but panavision stuff will fit.

hmmm, really, i wonder why the guy told me 17mm, not even a millimeter diffence, maybe 15mm will work, maybe a little paper tape :)
thank you!

Panavision UK uses 19mm.

thanks guys! jason, now ill have to wait until i see if its 17mm or 5/8 inch, i know in a week when it arrives, but i assume you can make either.
i think what i would really want or need is a spacer of some sort, so that i could use my 15mm rods. i believe they made one for 19mm to 15mm.

I received the plate in the mail today, the seller was right, its definitely 17mm, what i really need to make it useful is a flexible spacer that is 17mm in diameter and 2mm thick. let me know if anyone can help, thanks!

well, its about making my 15mm rod setup work, in a 17mm space, actually a bit of paper tape worked, but i might go for a more permanent solution, like a custom made spacer.

You *may* have another problem.. which is that the panavision baseplate may not center the mattebox on your lenses optical center even if you get your rods to fit in the mounting holes.
I did once have to set up a panavision setup on a non panavised arriflex, and I seem to remember having to have a machinist make an intermediate bracket for one of the components.
At the time I worked at a big enough company that it was just the machinist's assignment for the day, but if we had not done it, the mattebox would have been so far off center that our wide lenses could not have avoided seeing it to one side or the other..
Basically, if you have a panavision baseplate, it likely still belongs to panavision. That's not absolute, as there were a few legit sales to surplus dealers.. but they were not common.
I only knew of 2 Panastar cameras (pre "gold") cameras that they legitimately sold.. and maybe 2 prime lenses.. both with cracked elements.. those were sold on condition of no further resale..
But.. some matteboxes, some brackets, and some panavised arri 2C bodies were sold.. along with some housings, follow foci... and other bits..

the plate actually says arriflex on it, not panavision anywhere, i think arri just made some panavision sized plates, also i bought it from a seller in Israel, so who knows what went on there. the mount seems to be centered too, i rigged it all up and the matte box fits right where it should, thats one of the reasons i bought it. i know some plates are off centered and this one was centered, i also bought it because it was a great deal with a dovetail. its mainly for my second head for balancing, but it would be nice to have some sort of professional spacer, im going to see how my AC's feel about it on the next job.
for now, paper tape :)
