Hi,

So I received some footage with a duplicate roll number, they accidentally labeled the mag in camera to roll 20 which we already shot.

What is the best way to change the roll number afterwards? Renaming the files? I just want the files to be A021 instead of A020.

Thanks

I'd be careful about renaming anything. Since all clips are uniquely named anyway, why not just add metadata to differentiate the rolls?

Without renaming SSD/Roll drop it into a new folder and call the folder 20A.

Renaming the files does not change the internal metadata which can result in confusion and error down the line.

Since the clips themselves should have unique clip names (due to the last two characters being randomly generated), having them start A020 should not be a problem for editorial.

But do you want to? IMO, asking for trouble. :-/

Joe, what NLE are you cutting with?

I'm on Premiere CS6, editing with the native files.

The above question is what I'm trying to figure out, should I rename them, is it possible to change the metadata as well?
I'd like to so I don't have two duplicate rolls, it would just be changing the the 0 to a 1 but I don;t know what kind of damage that will do done the line.

Since the clips themselves should have unique clip names (due to the last two characters being randomly generated), having them start A020 should not be a problem for editorial.

I guess with the random numbers it shouldn't be an issue but it's just the perfectionist in me.

The perfectionist in you (I can relate) should tell you that you don't want to have conflicting metadata and the potential for mysterious and irreversible "issues" going forward. I say "don't do it." If you do, don't say you weren't warned. :-)

As far as I know its not possible so I would recommend not doing it. I rename from our Canon B camera but I always leave the epic. I do add a name to each clip in FCPX however but still keep the start of the name.

I haven't had that problem, so this is more a question....

Wouldn't be the native way to get everything "clean" -- to load those in RED Cine X and write out R3D (Trim) files with new names? (Of course not trimmed at all.)

Are there more than the two concerns (?): to keep the RMD file links and 2GB file partings (if that large).
