  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

wow

To really have a new energy revolution a means of better storage has been neccesary for a long time. Advances in electronics and computing have progressed at a rate far lagged behind by energy storage. As we know if we don't start reducing green house gasses now the suffering our children and grandchildren will be facing will only be worse. With a better means of storage energy production can be distributed down to the consumer level. Especially in the 3rd world this could have a profound impact.

Now it seems the first really big break has been made. "One thousand times the capacity" of traditional batteries. Still quite a few years for it to become available but finally some hope for the future. With this new 3d li ion battery you can get both the high enegy output of a capacitor and the long life of a battery. Charges in 1 second! Start your car with your phone. Shoot for a week on one battery. Electric cars that can go across country on one charge... etc.

What is the increase over normal lithium type batteries. Will be interesting, particularly the life reliablity, recharge cycles. I am still waiting for the silicon nanowire batteries that promised 10 times increase over other lithium batteries, but seems to be years over the expected delivery times. So look out for that, it is enough to make long range electric vehicles practical, and long running Red camera batteries, or small batteries.

N, nobody around here much might perceive the implications of this for them, but it has implications. Thanks for posting this.

Wayne.

That is cool! I remember when 511 came out with their "light for life" flashlight. It used a super capacitor and was capable of charging from dead to full in less than a minute. The light was super bright and lasted for over an hour. I always thought if they could combine that tech with a battery it would be rad. It seems they have, or at least they will :) Thanks for the link.

It's interesting but....

It's interesting but....

there has been a lot of this same sort of approach in battery tech for a couple of years.

Looks good in the lab, or even test samples, rarely scales well to the real world, real world
sizes, and real world use.

There are so many hurdles for tech like this when you actually scale up to production.

This is absolutely the approach, more volumetric surface area allowing quicker charge
and discharge etc., but we are still easily a decade off before we have full production
type products.

Still exciting to see them working on micro scales and below... this will be were the real
changes happen.

Nano is the new plastic.

I will add that the decade or more prognostication I just made
could be easily shortened if DARPA deems it mission critical.
The D.O.E. doesn't have balls like the D.O.D. sub departments
do.

And if they see a safe way of getting so tech to soldiers and
the battlefield (without turning them into walking high energy
density bomb just waiting to explode), then we will see that
tech much sooner. I know they are working on such things,
especially the portable solar charging blankets and smaller.

I do miss the days when NASA seemed to be the driver
of such tech also. Seemed such cool thing to use the tech
the astronats did...

...though I never got use to the taste of Tang, which later
I found out, after childhood, wasn't even created by or
for NASA.

And add in the complexity that there are certain industries that don't want to see some of this tech make its way into things such as...cars. :-(

Interesting comments. Michael I agree with you that this might interest the D.O.D. but as you are sure to agree with their record in the past has been far from encouraging. Huge investments have been made in technology with little to say for it. What did "star wars" defense spending in the 80s actually give us.

I also agree with Steve and that many vested interests would prefer the status quo.

Holy cow!

I just spent the weekend processing OTHER recent scientific advances based on our understanding of plant photosynthesis and harvesting energy. I condensed what I learned into a short blog article, called "The Coming Tidal Wave of Energy".

http://dillonthomasdigital.com/incoming-tidal-wave-of-energy

Add to this the recent announcements out of Ambri (backed by Bill Gates - Liquid Metal Batteries) which are currently testing out large scale models of cheap, localized storage mediums for energy.

The world is going to be changed dramatically and very soon!

N, im a bit confused, it says over 2000 times competing microbatteries, but 30 times further signal, or 30 times smaller for normal battery packs, something seems admis. Forgetting the microbatteries, 30 times distance implies much more than 30 times energy density. 30 times energy density in battery packs might include packing materials and circuites, maybe it is 120 times. Microbatteries are probably prone to leakage, even from superposition like Dillont is talking about, so this might just be a design that gets around that issue more effectively.

Dillont, that's my sort of solution, thanks for that. Actually there has been a variety of tech that is supposed to get above 50% efficency since the 80's, they all seem to fade away. A recent one, which is also like something I would come up with, is where they coat the cell with nano attenas that ring when photons hit them and collect up to something like 60 or 70% efficency.

Wow I'd completely forgotten about that one, this was a couple years ago, IIRC. Indeed, using nanostructures in a 3D space allows far more photons of light to be captured in a solar system. I think then it was an idea that had not yet been tried out using material science?

I suspect that the super material graphene will come into play here, and soon. If they can make the nanostructure aware of the quantum phenomenon, that would be something else.

The one I'm thinking about, was tried I think, as a surface, no mention of 3D or solar systems.

I did see somebody propose to look for advanced civilizations by looking for timing from solar collectors around stars. I think it was before april fools day, it's hard to tell with some of the things they come up with. But this gets ridiculous on a large scale, maybe possible if travel beyond your system is impractical and maybe if they have matter synthesis, as to produce a large effect needs both a large population and large mining which diminishes resources for the population to live with and in. Would you ever reach enough of a population density and enough available resources to produce a distributed timing effect readily detectable, maybe so, particularly if you made sites bigger, which then gets into an issue of controlling gravity. Yes I think it is possible, but unlikely without the right conditions and physics. The people were talking about a cloud, but if they can detect a planet, then a very large localized array can have a similar effect. Still the other options include fusion, matter synthesis should also enable destruction to produce power, and then there is drawing energy from space itself.

I try to figure out things to experiment on one day. One fascinating thing I saw on a program called sightings on years ago, on the paranormal. I took time to have a look at a few episodes, and they were allegedly doing real life filming of paranormal activity, and very time the activity started the temperature would drop a degree or more, and people were chilled to the bone. I remembered hearing this sort of report over the tears before. A degree or so drop is not going to instantly chill you to the bone, unless the drop is produced from harvesting energy from space itself (presumably to power the activity) which would draw energy not just from the outside of the body, but the body itself, despite coats and clothing, which would be very chilling,as the body truest to maintain a higher temperature. I tried o figure out how to do this scientifically. You could do this on sunlight, all you need too do is look for downshifted light frequencies from stars, maybe planets, very little resources required. The light will probably be drastically diendhifted,to be abnormal from natural sources. Just deleted some stuff people should not know about. Am going to be using it a bit in my Science fiction writing.

Been meaning to research that sightings program to see how fake it was.

My apologies,

What I meant to say was the 3D scaffold nanostructure inside a solar cell! They're experimenting with 3D nanostructure / scaffolding structures in a lot of devices and are seeing 'exponential' returns for the 3D nanostructures.

And I like the way you think, Wayne.

I get that a lot from engineers, but until I do something with it I have to suffer a lot of the doubters. I actually been considering multidimensional photon trapment for years. I just had another energy yielding structure idea as I was typing. I have been contemplating it mainly from another use, but have not concentrated on refinement fir power generation. So much to see and do and so little time.

Are you an engineer Dillont?

Just watching the documentary "Tell Them Anything You Want" on Maurice Sendak who wrote "Where the Wild Things Are". Fascinating, I seldom say that.

Just a side note about paranormal activity on TV. Years ago I was shooting a show about ghosts and whatnot. We had a group of ghost hunters on the show with tons of gizmos to detect activity. Their most effective (in their words) was an electric magnetic field detector. This thing would go off if there were spirits in the room with them and it would always coincide with a drop in temperature according to our experts. Well, I quickly realized that our walkies were making this thing go apeshit when we keyed them. So, like any good TV cameraman, I taped a walkie (with the volume all the way down) under a chair in the deepest darkest part of the castle. When our ghost hunters entered the room I keyed the crap out of my walkie and presto! Instant mayhem :) They all began reporting an extreme temperature drop and hairs on the back of their neck standing up and the usual nonsense. My point... don't believe everything you see on TV, and point 2... people will feel and experience what they want to experience. The brain is good at that :)

This thread however is quite fascinating. Thanks N_Villers, Wayne, and Dillont. You guys are super smart and I love hearing your thoughts... even if I don't immediately understand it all :)

Hey Wayne, I'm not an engineer. I just think like one sometimes, apparently.

I had a thought too - nanostructure scaffolding - I wonder if they can be engineered to be able to recognize various quantum states and trap particles as they pop into place? I also wonder if this is the very mechanism that plants are using for photosynthesis.

I think most people would read this and think "god, what pure hogwash!", but if plants are doing this very thing already, whats to stop us from engineering a better way to do it? Indeed, I blogged about 2 recent discoveries that seem to be doing the very thing using synthetic compounds. Seems that we really are on the verge of tremendous change.

I don't know, I'm skeptical about this. Some ca,era man trying to foil a valid experiment, and sudden shock lowers body temperature. ;)

Yep, onto that idea for years, should be simple, but which simple?

With these things just member the duracell fusion battery thing in the Matrix. In general plants are probably not doing it to any significant extent, if at all. So itthings like this can sound a bit fusion battery to people.

Meant to tell you that earlier elsewhere.

Thanks.

Wayne.

If you call walking around a modern castle with and EMF detector and a thermometer a valid experiment for finding ghosts... I just gave them what they wanted :)
