Just installed the new Intel X-25 80GB SSD in my Late 2008 MacBook Pro 15". The difference is insane!

AJA System Test

250MB/Sec Read
70MB/Sec Write

OS X system response is MUCH faster. Truly hard to believe how quickly Mac starts up and shuts down. Applications open much faster and browsing the web is easily twice as fast AND I "had" the faster 7200 320GB to start with. There's no going back.

Next i'd like to install 4 of these in RAID 0 in my Mac Pro with Apple RAID card. Could be 750 MB/Sec Read or faster.

Only $500 from Amazon. I've heard they'll be $250 in a couple more months.

Shooter,

how long - comparing to your previous experience - you can work on batteries with this new disk?

thank you,

filip

SSD seems to be the key until Apple include Firewire 3G or USB3 to their machines.
What is the largest SSD right now?

Of course, no one knows how long term reliable these will be, but they sound great on paper!

shooter - I assume you are using X25M - not the X25-E Extreme SATA SSD?

Correct. The X25M. Amazon now has the 160GB version for about $989 now by the way.

The X25-E largest size is only 32GB right now and costs $599 on Amazon. However, it apparently has a WRITE speed of 170MB/s with same read speed of 250MB/s whereas the M only WRITES at 70MB/s. The E is more for Enterprise Database servers as it is optimized more for random 4KB reads and writes.

Actually...

"The 32GB X25-E is capable of writing up to 4 petabytes (PB) of data over three-year period (3.7 TB/day), and double that for the 64GB version - delivering outstanding data reliability."

Native RED Raw in Final Cut

Native RED Raw in Final Cut

Are you able to play in real-time RED footage ingested with Native mode selected in Final Cut?

I have the same laptop but with a 320gb 7200k drive and playback is not stable with footage ingested with Native mode.

Although with my laptop the RED programs can play the RED Raw footage.

I am able to playback footage ingested with ProRes HD.

Thanks in advance for any information about this with SSD drives.

Eric
