  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Would you rent a R1 if you can rent a scarlet for about the same price?

As many rental places we're wondering if people will continue renting the R1s once they will be given the choice to go for a Scarlet package in the similar price range.

I know there are some specs that the R1 still has the upper hand onto compared to the Scarlet, but I'm wondering if other advantages of the Scarlet (size, weight, hdrx, etc.) would not make up for it to the point where R1 rentals would become marginal.

If you're a potential renter or if you're a rental house and already got some vibes from your local customers in regards to that topic please chime in and participate in the poll.

Thanks

This seems like a silly poll, They are very equal cameras and yet not. Both have there differences and advantages. It really depends on what you need for a specific production.

depends on the project.
our red goes out regulary. mainly because of 2k 100 fps.
dont know if scarlet can do that.
doc's asked for scarlet instead of epic though.
we will offer all of them.

I imagine Scarlet will drop the price of R1MX a bit, but I would expect similar prices since they both offer tradeoffs. R1MX is more cumbersome and lower bit depth but it has 4.5k and twice the framerates and proven stability comparatively for the near future.

Scarlets should rent for a bit more than Red Ones. That said, it depends on what "similar price" is, and whether the project needs the added capabilities, etc.

We anticipate very similar pricing between the current R1 MX with SSD pricing and Scarlet pricing in terms of rentals. As others have mentioned, there will be different needs for different jobs, but eventually it will gravitate toward the choice being between Scarlet and Epic per project.

Also, it depends if the scarlet's are as crippled as the current state of the epics. I recently shot video this past weekend on Epic (without the last firmware update).... and experience was not good at all. NO playback enabled forced me to rent AJA ki-pro, (Costing me more money and adding more weight to my setup), had, rent Hd-sdi monitor as the hdmi port is not enabled either.... then the 2x 128GB cards took 30-40 minutes to dump, slowing us down... NO AUDIO enabled for reference!?? wtf... lol

If i knew better, i would have taken a working RED MX, with all the accessories (working sound, hdmi and hd-sdi, 320GB hardrive, RED bricks) ANYDAY!!!

Therefore.... it all depends on the package and what you are getting for your money...

Ok I should have specified that it was for an equivalent basic package on both the R1 and the Scarlet.

From what we've seen people who purchased Scarlets in France are looking into renting them around 250e for a basic package.

Not sure if we should continue renting out our R1 packages lowering them down to match that Scarlet price or if it's better to sell the R1s right now.

I think it will again boil down to project needs.

A Red One MX has better capabilities in motion capture than a Scarlet. Higher frame rates at larger image size. The larger image size for higher frame rates means a lot when your image crops down. Suddenly you don't have a lens wide enough or studio large enough to get the 120fps shot. Red One 2k at 120fps versus further crop for Scarlet at 1k for 120fps.

Currently, there are more aspect ratio flavors to pick from on a Red One. I imagine that will eventually change with Scarlet though.

Since the Red One MX doesn't have any HDRx, that will be a deciding factor for some projects to go with the Scarlet. But then I think that the majority, not all, of most projects needing HDRx will then want the Epic capabilities over a Scarlet.

Size: well that is a no brainer. Docs shooting one man run-and-gun and only 24-30fps, then those productions will go with the Scarlet.

Audio: 4 channels IN. Currently only the Red One. Separate dual audio means adding another person sometimes when it's not in the budget. Red One audio is pretty awesome.

I think the larger rental companies in the Southeast states will be providing both Red One MXs and Scarlets at roughly the same price probably over the next year. Certainly can't predict beyond that. Things change fast.

All the best,
lael

Yes... silly poll. The cameras are very similar, but not quite the same (as has been pointed out). Depends on one's needs... In many situations, I think the included kit as a whole will also be a determining factor. Rental of either camera would be a bust if they don't have the support package I need to go with it.

This question isn't silly at all. I understand that, from a technician point of view, the Red One MX and the Scarlet are two different beasts. But technicians rarely rent cameras. Producers do ;-)

So, from my point of view : the cheapest and newest will win. Unless some dops want specific frame rates, etc... of course.

BUT this applies for a short length rental. For an indy feature film shot over 1 month or 2, well, it's probably cheaper to buy a full working Scarlet package, and sell it afterwards.

Red owners will meet more and more difficulties to rent their gear because of the multiplication of owners. Great time for producers and directors ;-)

And don't forget the other DSLR competition : rental companies face them already.

Rentals? RED ONE can beat Scarlet.

Since I am shooting 4K HD at 23.98fps I would go with the lowest rent to achieve that. However I will have to check workflow and recording media The RED ONE leads in that category.

It is actually a good question because they are similar, but I would not rent a Scarlet for the same price as a Red 1 (as long as it's MX).
You get higher framerates and not to forget the fact that film crews are pretty comfortable with Red 1 now, a new camera might be tough on a tight schedule and budget (which I presume because the question doesn't have an Epic-X answer). Only factor was if the way it was going to be shot was very difficult with handhelds and such where you need a small camera, but I rather use a Red, it has a higher price for a reason.

The only reason I'd rent the RED ONE over Scarlet is if I absolutely needed 120fps 2K for specific uses on a project. I usually shoot a lot of handheld and the 48fps is fine fore most of my projects, so I'd rather go with Scarlet most of the time.

P.S. Christoffer, I watched the trailer for "Psalm 21" it looked really good!

The only reason I rent Scarlet over Red one is for a photo shooting and I won't even pay a similar price for it. Red One MX is a much better camera for me in many ways. Sometimes, I even go for Red one MX over Epic. It gets better now with the Playback Release but still has many field limitations.
Red One MX has more IO and monitoring options than Scarlet and there is no way I pay Scarlet rental for the same price as Red One MX rental. Moreover, I am expecting many kids one the block will own a Scarlet like Canon 5d Mark II now.

I think another consideration is lenses. when the RedMote Pro finally arrives, having the ability to use those wonderful Canon L primes for a fraction of the cost of PL glass will give the Scarlet an advantage IMO
