a forum closed to the world?! :(

a forum closed to the world?! :(

...no, thanks!

For the record, I don't think charging admission is going to solve any problems.
The easiest way is never solution for the simplest one.

On the contrary, elitism (RED took off from dvxuser, never forget it!) is always a shot in the foot.
(In an easter sunday? Not even as joke!)
Scarlet users are a bless for RED, therefore, for ALL RED customers.

Who doesn't think like that, it should very likely think that RED is a sort of charity or a soccer club (or alike). It is not, either of both.
A business is not eternal, needs clients (...) Not arrogancy.
No more, no less.

Two cents of euro from someone who -- also because of FREE reduser (Best JarRED contribution to this project IMHO aside ALL the rest we know), has brought dozens of people (non-students and students :-) to RED ...as future then, now current payers (either owners/co-owners or renters).

Motion pictures are made by crews of dozens of people, not by individuals praising their tiny membership of whatever inner club.

yes

yes

Yes to an owner's forum, oak leaf cluster if you have more than one camera.

How do you define someone that is a REAL pro? Is someone that shoots videos for youtube or funny or die a REAL pro? What about people that shoot industrials and corporate videos, are they REAL pros?
Is it only people in the union? Well, Tom Lowe is out.
Is it invite only? Owners only?

Where do you draw the line?

Ask the right questions...

These questions will always point people to say FREE!!!! Even me.

BigLUs discussion was about how the forum is filled with rubbish from the scarlet crowd and how EPIC PRO users, RED STAFF, long term RED EPIC pro contributors and valuable info is becoming lost in the noise.

So the question would be...

1. Do you want a RED USER PRO section or EPIC OWNER section with a membership fee (primarily set up to get rid of the rubbish chit chat that is building up in the current RED USER)

and

2. Leave RED user as it is. FREE and noisy

Something like that. ...

Mark, you'd still be on fee vs free... :D

Anyway. This idea of «my (EPIC) camera is better (PRO) than yours (Scarlet)» is counterproductive and not proper of RED. Even offensive IMO.

[2x EPIC + 2x Scarlet on order]

I'm a non-owner, longtime user that trys to keep my posts few and far between. I love the site and really dig the contributions of almost everyone who's posted so far in this thread. I understand that since I don't have a vested business interest in RED, when/if I do it'll likely be as a scarlet hobbiest, so I understand the issues with lower post quality don't affect me the same as the rest of you folks. However, I would like very much to still have access to what you guys and gals have to say and the great work you all take the time to create.

Thanks

Just have a control filter preferences setting so you can switch off any specific Forum from showing up in the the New Posts list. That way Father Time Red One #001 can switch off the Scarlet forum and those noisy kids playing on his lawn with their Scarlet's can switch off Red One or whatever doesn't interest them. Done and Done

No need for a class warfare on RU - the user can quietly filter out what does not interest them.

RED online education, documentation and support, on the other hand, needs a major update to be competitive with what's out there in the digital product world.

Most of the top guys RENT their cameras - like d Mullen. So they wouldn't be able to post?

If you had to pay, I think you'd lose a bunch of good people. It's starting to sort itself out a bit, now that people almost all have their cameras, and the ones left out (scarlet fixed) are going elsewhere.

Maybe change peoples access, and use forum that can allow you to select what you want to see. Epic User (registered owners) Epic All (open) etc or users get put into two categories owners and not, and you can run a filter to turn off those who don't. Scarlet and Redone as well. Anyone can read, but only owners can post in the registered categories?

Keeping reducer free and open is important to new red customers.

I agree with the premise but you're presenting a false dichotomy. The question is "how do you increase the signal to noise ratio?" I think the assumption that an "epic owners" forum being the answer is disproved by David Mullen (and as of last year every single epic owner). The notion that "pay to play" will fix it also isn't likely.

Something that I could seeing helping is an official support forum on RED.com. It would hopefully lure away a lot of the complaining and easy questions.

Just food for thought. An Epic owners only forum would rule out someone like me. I don't own an Epic. I still own my Red One (#523). Hopefully I have been a valuable contributor over the years and have certainly benefitted from the many people who have been generous in sharing their knowledge. I work with Epic cameras fairly regularly and I partner with someone who owns one. I have the good fortune to work on some pretty high end projects. The danger in limiting to owners only Epic/Pro forum is that you may filter out people who could be useful contributors just based on the fact that they don't own a camera. I acknowledge however, that the benefits of doing so may outweigh the negatives, i.e. you cut out a few qualified folks here and there but for the better good of a focused, productive forum.

It's that last sentence that probably could use the most attention. There have been some truly spectacular threads over the years that have provided good information, really useful tips and techniques, addressed problems and led to solutions. To me, the more of those types of threads the better. I'd love to see very focused threads which stay on course and become must reads. I'd love to see Blog sections from Jim and Jarred. They could talk about best practices, how to get the most out of RED images, challenges they are addressing, etc. I love Mike Mosts blogs because they tackle a subject matter head on and are very informative and you always walk away with new knowledge. More of that type of thing here on reducer would be great.

Quite often, good threads get derailed. I've been guilty of it at times. Trying to keep that to a minimum, and also trying to keep personal attacks out of the forums would be a good strategy. Despite some rough edges, I do think Reduser is still a good resource, probably one of the most active forums of its kind, and a place where industry veterans and those looking to break into it can communicate and have very positive results. So, if it stayed basically the same moving forward, I think it would be okay. If it were to strive for more substance, less noise that would make the user experience even more fulfilling. Jarred should be commended for the hard work he put into creating this site and DVXUSER. Amazing how far they have come.

Anyway, just my .02. Happy Easter!

I'm really thinking that an Epic owners only setting would be best. Others can look, only registered owners can post. That would be fair to all. Maybe have a noobie forum as part of it for intelligent questions. I found the forums to be very valuable before I received my Red One, and even more so before my two Epics arrived.
My two cents. Plus a vote for subscription at (almost) any cost is OK by me.

Michael, the problem with this line of thinking is that I would think (and we know) "Epic Renters" are just as valuable to the forum in terms of experience, ideas, contributions, and insight. Remember, someone is renting all those cameras at Off-Hollywood and other houses. We value their contributions just as much as any "owner".

What is old red user? As long as it is not scarlet user.

I would like my old scarlet threads restored from when the old scarlet forum was originally scrapped in the switch over to scarlet user.

Just reading this page to get an idea what it is about. You in no way are going to get rid of noise by going the route debated lately. I often find that a significant portion of owners that post are noise, half clued in, and think anything that is not their noise is noise {:( . However, never the less, by all means, stick the elite with the elite, and you should get a better outcome. If it was restricted to a few of us there would be even more sense everywhere and less niose or dumbness.

The forum is it's iwn house, it's own beast, but it could be better setup. A sub forums for high end cinema production and low end (starter outs to mid end). A forum for high end Eng sector production and low end (I am a local videographer for hire and starters). The same for documentary makers, high end, I work for Michael Moore, David Atterborough (is that the right name?) or do high end cinema dicumentary, low end independent run around. That should do it, and encourage the high end forum members to contribute to the low end forums too, and answer some questions.

The biggest problems with forum software us that it often does not contribute to adequate information sharing of answers. I have suggested on a number of forums an active frequently asked questions page or database (something a bit better than a knowledge base) or wiki attached to the forum and each sub forum (searching is hopeless very time consuming to get lots of accurate results). Users can submit questions and or answers they wish, the moderator/registered expert users verify it is true and let it in, highly automated of course (but the front end database interface has to be written). You will probably find in a wiki a small proportion of users will write a lot of it. Here is the great part, users can look it up before they post a post (likely a question asked more than ten times that people got sick of answering many moths ago, but too hard to find reading or searching) greatly reducing new noise. The other two easy alternative steps, is re-edit the first posts, or allow subposts under, with a summary of what is found and have stick FAQs for people to look at. It's that or put up with repeating questions, disscussions arguments moaning, whinging and complaining about repeat questions, and maybe spend up to ten times the time moderating that.

Its going to be a tough one to figure out for Jarred.

I just want more from RED staff itself. Very quite from there side for sure.

If they give the Forum less love... Then the place falls in chaos.

Does not really worry me now the more I think about it. I'm slowly drifting away anyway....

Probably a good thing.
