Would you buy a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 from a large online retailer like Newegg.com?

They have the best price but I worry that they may send them the lesser batches thinking that there are mostly consumers buying from them. However, Newegg is east to return stuff to if you feel you got a bad one.

Anyone know of a better deal at an other place? Does Samy's match prices?

Absolutely. I've had nothing but good experiences with Newegg. I've spent several thousands there and they have delivered every time, and always insanely quickly.

Do you really Canon would take the time to separate "lesser" lenses and ship them to a specific reseller? This is an L lens, buy it and be happy.

Although I have never bought camera equipment there, they have never failed to deliver fast, well packaged and as long as you research, a good-great price (except they are in California and I have to pay tax...not their fault:)

If they carried Tokina, I would probably have bought from them myself.

Another thumbs up for newegg.com. I accidentally ordered an incompatible graphics card a while ago, and they took it back immediately without charging a restocking fee when I called them up to explain. I've spent over $10k with them over the years and have no complaints.

Yes. I heard Canon was getting sloppy with their quality control, L-series most definitely included. Absolutely plausible. Likely? Not sure.

Ok, well I am glad to hear everyone loves the Egg as much as I do. I've also spent about 10k with them and trust them with computer equipment without hesitation.

However, I found a better price... Sorry. But thank you all the same.

They have a good seller rating: http://www.ephotocraft.com/itemdesc.asp?ic=013803020090 $1,265 and no shipping. They also have a good price for a B+W UV I want, and the camera.

sloppy qc and deliberate selling of "lesser" lenses to specific resellers are completely different things...this sounds like conspiracy theory. To suggest that Canon would pull lesser quality lenses and sell them to consumers just doesn't make sense, why would a company like Canon want to lessen their brand with such a foolish practice?
It would take less energy just to fix the "lesser" product.

You are assuming things about my statement. I was actually thinking of just one person, and not a CEO or anything like that either. Just someone that may be responsible for quality control and also have a little pull on distribution. Maybe one day when he feels worried about weaker performance from a few tables/people, and he thinks of sending it here instead of there, in hopes that people won't notice as much, to prevent an abnormal number of returns, what have you. This is not a political book man, just a thought on a thread.

As with others, I've had nothing but amazing fast and cheap experiences from newegg.com

Heck, I got the new Halo 3 ODST game 2 weeks early by preordering with them, thus I approve
