  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Worthy competitor for the EPIC??

Global shutter and connecting options aside, the F55 compares to Scarlet at USD 13.200 while the new reduced price for Epic is still coming within a few hours from now.
In my opinion I wouldn't say that the Scarlet in anyway compares to the F55 spec for spec... For the F5 there's more of an argument.

Regarding the price from Phillip Bloom's website, he quotes it as being 50K (USD?):

"On paper, the F55 is an Epic beater. Yep…I love the Epic, amazing camera, but again on paper these out performs that camera in every way and I have been told list price on the F55 will be around $50k body only so not cheap, raw module probably another $10k….F5 I am told list price of $18k. Also the 4K on the this will only be via Sony module and won’t work on 3rd party ones…Even with these prices, two very different prices for different markets….war truly has been waged. With a global shutter, that sensitivity and that price, coupled with the reliability and backup of a company like Sony. Red are going to be in serious trouble. Please ignore by previous Red issues. I have no ill feelings towards red. None at all. i adore there cameras and if I hadn’t blown all my money I got when I returned my Epic on drugs and hookers (again joke!!!) then I would possibly have dipped my foot into it again. But now? No chance. I want an F55. I want it now. Give it to me now or I will scream and scream until I am sick!!!!"

That's why i think Phillip Bloom's entire blog is garbage. In the real world the EPIC has 14 megapixels, native RAW recording at 5K and shoots raw at 96 or 120fps in 5K RAW. On paper the Dragon sensor is about to be released. The Meizler module is in production. How can he post that the F55 beats the EPIC in every way? The Dragon sensor DR on paper beats the F55 sensor, the iso range beats the F55. Mind you I love the Sony F55 release... I'm considering buying one (if the price is right). I just think his review shows a whole lot of bias and are generally uninformed and unprofessional. Let the tech specs speak for itself. Even more let what is on the market speak for itself.

Sensors are the heart of every digital camera. The company that has the best sensor is most likely to have the best camera.

We at RED have put a tremendous amount of our resources towards sensor development. We do it in house. We do not have outside companies doing the work for us.

There are 3 main characteristics that need to be addressed in sensor development... (no particular order).

1. Dynamic Range

2. Resolution

3. Frame Rates.

Some companies will tell you that 1080P is "good enough" and that dynamic range is all that matters. Not so. Everything matters. 1080P or 2K is not enough. 60fps is not good enough. And dynamic range is the holy grail.

There has been a leap-frog effect recently going on with sensors. Someone has more resolution... then someone has more dynamic range... etc.

Dragon is fire-breathing for a reason. It does everything... times a million. It will have more native dynamic range than any digital camera ever made... way more than film actually. It will be 6K. And it will run at speeds that you expect, over 100 fps.

The incredible thing is that the Dragon sensor is an upgrade. You don't have to buy a new camera to get the advantages of the Dragon sensor. You just need to own an EPIC or Scarlet.

RED is designed for the shooter.... and the owner. We believe in Obsolescence Obsolete. We don't pick your pocket. We are you.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion."

We need you. Our program doesn't operate without you.

Jim

I've printed out what Jim said and it's now on paper. :-)

If your going to disagree with Bloom's article disagree with it, don't attack the author because you don't like the opinion he formed, it could be that Global shutter is a big deal to Philip Bloom, who knows but your post showed more bias then his article ever could have and it's because of this one line.

Dude on paper what we have are tech specs of a camera that has not been released yet. How can he say the Sony F55 outperforms the EPIC in "every way"? Why would I want to listen to a person like that? The Dragon sensor has not been released yet just as the Sony F55 has not been released yet. So "on paper" how can one outperform the other? That is illogical and shows emotional bias. As a matter of fact... if you do a tech spec comparison "on paper" with what RED is about to release and what Sony is about to release... is article looks even more stupid.

I'm not biased against the Sony F55... I have their line up as my cover page on facebook and plan to get a F55 if the price is right. What I don't like is bloggers that spew garbage.

of course they are capable, but they were capable on the last effort as well. Like I said in the other thread I am only repeating what I was told. I was told the new lenses were "secretly" made by Cooke for Sony. So either he was misinformed or it really is a "secret" (even though he told us).
Occam's razor would have us believe the rep you spoke to was misinformed.

Does anyone know the exact bitrates of this new XAVC codec?
I understand it's capable of 8bit, 10bit and 12bit coding, with 4:2:0, 4:2:2 and 4:4:4.
The 10bit 4:2:2 is most interesting to me.

...

Seriously though, looking at the images the F65 poops out, it's definitely doing something right. Whatever (il)logic it is, it definitely supersamples better than any other cameras I've seen (including Epic?), has a boatload of highlight recovery, and low-light capability.

Pssst, Jeff thinks the F65 footy looks like shit.

Just what the world needs is another effing codec.

Smart Compression

Smart Compression

If that effing codec helps 4K production and distribution infrastructure proliferate sooner I'm in.

A 300mb/s RGB 4K codec with a published standard might just be the compromise that we need.

Yes, 300mb/s is going to have artifacts, truncated color, bit depth limitations and other issues but it should be enough to make a credible 4K/24fps motion image with off the shelf hardware.

Let's hope a well designed production infrastructure for 4K will evolve over the next few years that balances quality and cost all along the pipeline. In the short term we just need something easy to manage, widely supported, robust enough to handle light post processing but lightweight enough for distribution.

Cheers - #19
