There are rumors running around about the unveiling of the Sony F4 camera on October 30th.
4K? probably. Shoots RAW? it's a guess.

We'll know in 2 weeks time.

Hmm, I thought F65 is the competitor to the Epic (and Dragon of course). It's a cinema camera after all, y'know.

Most likely a direct competitor to the C500, but probably not RAW. They don't want to lose some of their f65 market to their new more affordable 4K option so they will limit it's capabilities and it will be in a smaller package like the fs700. They need a prosumer 4k camera to stay relevant in that market since Canon has several options for prosumer 4k (c500, and 1DC), and panasonic and jvc ready to announce their 4K cameras.

Must be killing them to know that they cant rip people off anymore.. having to sell cameras under for a fraction of what they use to charge...
We have to thank RED for making all other competitors bring there prices down for performance... thats for sure.
Look forward to seeing what this thing is... not that I would ever purchase another SONY product ever again.

Indeed. There's no way in hell Arri would've priced their camera the way they did if Red didn't force their hand.

I'm a Sony fan, but an Akio Morita fan more than anything. It's still amazes me how complacent Sony became, especially
with it's poor HD offerings that continually dropped the ball, seemingly afraid to set a standard.

Red's done it for Sony and hopefully they'll be sending a large bento box to Jim. Either that or a Japanese woman telling Jim to
"lick my stocking, Mr. Jim". (Lost in Translation) :)

F4 shooting 4K - likely.

F4 offering a fully RAW uncompressed 4K recording option - highly unlikely

F4 offering a compressed 4K recording option - likely
• recording media; SxS? - likely
• data rate - will they keep it 50mb/s or less to protect the F65 market? Will they offer 220mb/s?
• S-log standard or optional?

F4 compressed 4K recording codec - SStP? AVC? DNxHD? ProRes (mostly kidding)? Cinema DNG (still kidding)?

F4 offering 4K spigot for off board recording - interesting question
• dual 3G SDI? single HDMI?
• 8 bit, 10bit or 12 bit out the spigot?

I feel like Sony is at an inflection point in their camera line up right now. The F65 is their answer to the Epic and it makes great images, however the back end is science experiment and the data load is a serious disincentive. Say what you want about the horrors of compression but smart, mild to moderate compression can be a serious enabler for high resolution imaging as RED has shown. IMO the F3 has been the bang for the buck leader in Sony's stable since it came out. Nice shadow rendition with low noise (probably a lot of DSP characterization internally), handles highlights better than all but the big 3 (Epic, Alexa, F65) and manages to hold genuine chroma below 20IRE amazingly well. If the F4 can build on the value proposition of the F3 by keeping the price reasonable for owner/ops and production companies then it should do well.

Sony's on board DSPs have led the industry for more than a decade so if anyone can offer a 4K point and shoot rec709 camera its probably them. With decent optics the image quality should suit a huge part of the market demand and help advance 4K adoption. Jim/RED took aim at 35mm film when designing an electronic alternative, Sony (with the exception of the F65) just keeps making better video cameras, some with cinema aspirations.

At the end of the day I just feel incredibly lucky that we have so many terrific choices these days at every price point. All the format conversion and transcoding issues in this rapidly evolving marketplace can be a PITA, but image quality from digital sensors at the acquisition stage has improved immensely. Now, if we could just do something about how much the distributors stomp on it by over compressing the feed...

What Sony managed to get for Digibeta decks still makes my blood boil.

Well said Mr. Toya! +1

Sony ... HA HA HA HA (... Paul rolls on the floor; he laughs as he wipes the tears from his eyes ...). Sony... OK... No.

Someone said the following once ... This is REDUSER... But by all means go get taken advantage of.

F4, seriously.

I'd say it's VERY worthy....if these are true...

http://pavphotography.altervista.org/17211-and-here-is-the-first-picture-of-the-new-sony-f54k

320fps at full 4K....

from what I've read on DVX, the few people that have been getting info on the camera said they were clearly targeting the markets of the Scarlet and C500. If this comes in at that price point...holy crap!

Also can't wait to see RED's response if this is the real deal.

16K ExRUMOR sensor?

I don't think that twitter pic is the real thing.

That image looks like a fake mock-up.

I'm not buying it, or the associated Twitter account, for a minute.
