Wow

Wow

what do you say to such well thought out analysis.

I mean, I....

I don't even know where to start.

Tyler, there are fantastic cameras out there right now. The 5D, 7D, and 1D Mark IV are really great for that price range and what they give you in low light performance with 35mm DOF. The EX-1 is a great camera, in the hands of someone who can work within its limitations. Same with HVX200. My HV20 is a great little camera and can certainly be used to tell a story. Never let technology be the thing holding you back. There will always be something better right around the corner. The question is, can you sell it and get a nice percentage of your money back when Scarlet does roll out? Or can you get another camera, not have to worry about resale value and save for Scarlet as well?

I hope my tone doesn't come off as condescending in my original post. I feel for people who are trying to get started, trying to acquire gear they can afford. The only issue I have is that there's no requirement on RED to provide you that gear. They have to do what's best for them as a company, and their customer base. It's not like there are no options for people in the sub $3K range.

Always do as much homework as you can when it comes to camera purchases. It will save you time and money in the long run.

I see what you are saying. I remember when I first found out about RED. I was thinking "I knew this would come some day, a digital replacement for film that is as good or better". Of course, ONE was way out of my price range. Having a passion for videography however, you always 'dream' about getting something like that someday.

So you can imagine how excited I was when I found out about Scarlet. That was about the time that I really went out and found out what this "RED Thing" was all about.

So, that was about the beginning of Summer. about the time that I decided to safe for a really good video camera to replace the little DV camera I have right now. Having noticed that the Scarlet had been continually pushed back as far as the release date goes, I decided to try my best to forget about Scarlet, and hopefully by the time that I was ready to purchase a new camera, I would find the Scarlet again (Relive my first moments of amazement) and try to figure out how it might fit in my budget.

Well guess what, that happened. I found Scarlet again yesterday, and relived the days when I used to spend hours upon hours trying to find out how to attain the much coveted "Film Look" that is very popular among the ones who cannot afford film (and all of the entities that go along with it). I then found that the RED was going to release more info the next day. I was half expecting fro what came about however, and I can't blame RED in the least bit.

So, as it is, I think that it is probably worth waiting for, and using the camera I have now until Scarlet is released.

But thanks for your input! I'm glad to see that there are some real "gems" in this forum.

I do dispute the fact that they will be able to create all that stuff they are promising, and at the prices that they are promising. Already, now it’s becoming obvious that getting a usable Scarlet model is a $10k affair, and not a $3.5k as they had you to believe last year.

Eugenia,

The solution is to have a RED commune... not to kick Jim in the ass. Why don't you share a Scarlet with other people that don't save? A type of Chinese communism is in order here.

>you will see he really believes in what he is doing.

Oh, I believe he does! I know that his interest is genuine!

When someone has a serious hobby doesn't mean that it's just something he/she does on weekends. I am afraid that our understanding of the word "hobby" is different maybe?

What it does mean in my book is that he/she could be starting the business based on the interest about the technology in itself, and from pure curiousity, and not to create an actual profitable business. To me, a lot of things RED feel like "if it becomes profitable, well, even better -- if not, well, we had fun researching and playing engineers". While this is all fine if you're a billionaire, it doesn't strike me very nice if I was to be a customer.
He may be a billionaire, but not too many people get to that status without taking business very serious. Bankrolling a company like RED is no hobby in my opinion. For what it's worth the company has grown quite a bit in size since the beginning, and the goal I'm sure is to make a profit. Otherwise, it would be bad business and I can't see someone with Jim's business background going in that direction.
I simply -- for the life of me -- can not take seriously RED when they spread themselves too thin over so many products. I just don't see these as actual final products, I see them as beta stuff that someone put together. Proof that the RED One had so many firmware upgrades so far. A "product" with the traditional sense, in that price, should have been bullet proof from Day 1. And I just don't see this happening with the new line of cameras -- if they ever come out.
When you're going for the status quo or rolling out technology in small, strategically planned increments, yes that can make your company seem more stable. But RED is doing some advanced stuff here. Why not give them a chance? Yes it might take longer than expected, but the thing is you wouldn't even be in on the conversation with Canon or Sony. You'd find out about it when it was ready and for some that's what they'd rather see. Others like being involved in the process, giving feedback and seeing the products evolve in front of their eyes. It's not for everyone, and we're seeing who's for that style and who isn't. But even RED seems to be moving towards a more finalized product when it ships, hence the delays. They want to get it right, and I believe will get it right.

Which camera were you planning on getting Eugenia?

Good for you Eugenia. Speak your mind and not be afraid. Even though the Red One is out there Red has a long way to go. It has taken Panasonic, Canon, et all many many years and products to establish themselves up and down the markets they serve. To attempt to be in the upper and low end of the camera business in a hurry is a high wire act very difficult to achieve smoothly. At some point in the short term Red will have to decide where it wants to be. For a camera manufacturing start up the higher market is the place where the commitment has to be first as proven by the Oct. 30 announcement. Maybe we can substitute hobby with pet project and make it sound more serious perhaps.

Why don't you share a Scarlet with other people that don't save? A type of Chinese communism is in order here.

What part of : "Scarlet doesn't even exist" is so hard to grasp?

>Which camera were you planning on getting Eugenia?

The new prosumer Canon that will come this Spring, with a bigger sensor. A bird told me (but Canon, unlike RED, doesn't tweet about it).
For now, what I already have I am happy with.

Vaporware... vaporware... vaporware.

What else would you call this other than a pure fallacy? How is "The new prosumer Canon that will come this Spring, with a bigger sensor" isn't any more real than what RED already has pictures of? Sure the dates have been pushed back, but it is something that is reality.

For those who I have had conversations with over the past few months about Scarlet, I always cautioned them to factor in at least a 20% contingency. Not only for a price increase but for accessories that might be critical to shooting the way you will want to shoot.

Unless you have gear from a previous camera system that can be transferred over to a new camera system, there are always going to be additional costs associated with a camera purchase. An EX-1 doesn't really cost the price tag you pay on B&H. After you add the # of batteries you really need to shoot, media, camera stabilizer, etc it all adds up and pretty soon you're closing in on $10K.

But that's where experience helps. When you've been through this at the professional level, the costs associated with doing business are less shocking. You know what you are getting into.

A lot of R1 owners were probably pretty shocked to see how much they ended up spending to accessorize their cameras. Maybe myself included to a certain extent. Some unforeseen expenses that made the camera better. They weren't all required but they made the experience of shooting with it all that much better.

I say if you can find a good alternative in the meantime by all means do it. Scarlet will be ready when it's ready and at that point you can assess the market and what's available at that time.

I would suggest there's a reason so many people on this forum are so incredibly pro-Red. They use Red Ones for real work. It's like the old Apple fanatic argument, "Of course they say that, they're an Apple fanatic". Why? They use them. The two things are inseparable. Those who have never shot with a Red one, who still think of it as a "video" camera, will just see fanboyism. Get one, actually shoot a real job on it. Compare it to cameras that cost 10x. Download a firmware upgrade and find yourself with a new camera. Then tell me Red are not serious.

>What else would you call this other than a pure fallacy?

I explained that above, you missed my update while you are writing your comment: "Canon has kept their mouth shut, unlike RED, they're not tweeting left and right about their new rocket launcher that can reach Mars." This makes the whole difference for me.

That is why Japan has cornered the camera market. When they have a product extremely close to production they start the rumor mill and the hype, not years before. Again that is why Panasonic, Canon and their compatriots rule the camera business and will for many, many years to come.

Even if it is, I don't mind it. I am happy with my current gear. However, Canon has kept their mouth shut, unlike RED, they're not tweeting left and right about their new rocket launcher that can reach Mars.
So, why this attack on RED and Jim?

Now I'm not quite sure where you are coming from. I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt.

This is starting to smell a bit foul. If you were planning on getting a Scarlet, I would understand some of the frustration. Bu you're happy with Canon and they have a new super camera coming out that you know about so why the the blog? Just curious.

Red needs a kick in the butt?! When they just upgraded our Red one from a 4k camera to a 4.5k camera for free? How did Canon give the 5DMkII 24fps? Oh, that's right, the 7D...

You guys and your vaporware products... for a second there I thought her rant was against vaporware products.

John, Red's style is not for everyone. I like a lot of the products offered by the companies you mentioned but I feel some credit has to be given to RED for at least coming in and trying a new perspective. Think about the marketing strategy RED has employed. You may not like it, but it's effective. I would think their marketing budgets are far less than the big boys, and yet their reach is extraordinary when you consider the disparity in marketing dollars.

I've had the arguments with people like this before steve, you have to realize, we'll never win, they alway assume they know whats up.

(Oh and I've been hearing about the SUPER DUPER CANON CAMERA ever since RED was annouced, Who is the fracking vaporware now?)

This statement confuses me. Your planning on getting a Canon video camera that doesn't exist yet?

So your saying it's your opinion that Canon will ship their unannounced camera before RED ships a camera that they have announced?

You never know, you might be right. But the unknown camera Canon might ship in the spring may not compete at all with RED. It may be another minor upgrade to already limited offerings.

RED has shown that they are the leaders in offering affordable, yet revolutionary camera technology.
