  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I love my Scarlet. It's the best camera I've owned. I worked long and hard for it - I moved away from home for a year's worth of sweat and tears in a horrible (creative-crushing) soul-destroying manual labour job - all to save up for this camera. Once I got my Scarlet, I kissed that job goodbye because I was back to doing what I loved. Making films. I've owned it for nearly 9 months now - it's my baby.
After today's day of shooting (which went fantastically!), walking back to my car from shooting a local street festival some [CENSORED]ing person decided to egg my camera. Not me - I wouldn't have minded if it was me - but my camera. One egg, aimed precisely. Right at the front of my camera.
So long into the night has been spent with tears and meticulous/thoughtful cleaning of my lens mount, touch screen, side handle, etc. The damage is yet to be tallied... :cryin:

RedUsers, any advice on how to get the smell of egg out of a Scarlet?
Or perhaps you've experienced a similar creative-block of the damaging kind? Please share your horror stories...

Not funny that it was done so maliciously (or perhaps thoughtlessly) - but you should be OK. Sounds like it didn't get inside to the OLPF.

To put you at ease - maybe- I use our two Scarlets to shoot a bunch of different lifestyle / cooking shows… after a week of shooting I often spend a full day cleaning cooking grease (MMMM Bacon) off of / out of the cameras. The fan on these sucks the smoke from a fry pan right through, and one day last month the 'cooktop cam' had bacon fat dripping down from the front fan port.

You'll be OK.

some people got their Scarlets stolen, you know... I think you´ll be fine.
I can relate to your experience and the emotional (plus financial) investment you have with your Scarlet. It´s sort of like dating this really great girl who is becoming more atractive to you as the days passes. Some like to show off their girl for everybody to see, others are more private and jealous (...my precious...). The point is, you can´t be out there with a really atractive lady without being aware and cautious of how people are going to react to her. :)

Yeah It's kind of a dumb situation to have happen. I do believe your scarlet will be okay (hopefully not needing any repairs by Red). The feeling would be the same for me as I watched a client walk around a crowded dance party with my Scarlet. It was hot and rowdy and I was so worried that someone would splash beer on it.

The camera was then later put on a crane and flew over the drunk crowd. I was waiting for folks to grab at it as if it was a prize. Anyhow, it may sting but as Fernando mentioned, at least it wasn't stolen.

Your egg would go well with Glen's grease...ha, ha.

No experience in this field really, but perhaps Q-Tips with rubbing alcohol for the cracks and crevices?

I'm pretty sure your camera will survive a crack at his face, his face definitely wont:-P

NEW PART OF MY TRAVEL PACKAGE ( 1 RED, LENSES, SHOULDER RIG, TRIPOD, GLOCK 45 AND SOME EXTRA AMMO) PRICELESS!!! LOL

Haha, thanks everyone. Pretty sure no one could pry this camera from my hands. But now I'm just glad it's not oozing grease.

Hopefully karma will catch up with them.

If there can be a silver lining attributed, then it would be that whilst the camera's eye has been sullied, your own pair remain unharmed. There are sometimes blessings to be discovered in adversity. This may well be one of them. Buy a lotto ticket. There well could be an improving trend. To quote - "there are users, losers and abusers and makers, shakers and creators". You know which you are. Making it count is what matters. Your eggthrower will probably go in the ground or up in smoke regretful of a wasted life.

Trust me, RED cameras have seen it all and then some, so you're in good company. I know of an R1 that was filming a surgery and was christened with blood and bits when a bone saw decided to share the love, an Epic that was knocked out of the sky by a pine tree and an Epic M that went for a swim, total immersion. There are plenty more horror stories of battle-scars from cameras who zigged when they should have zagged.

The sad truth is we are probably on our way to this kind of society in the US. I am starting to see firearms training shops pop up here in Massachusetts, which in some ways is a bit odd for this area. I think people are getting fed up with random crimes and no longer want to be victimized. In the OP's case, obviously shooting the person would not be the right answer but perhaps letting them know that next time they may not be so lucky if they get the wrong person who has had enough and is ready to snap. Seeing more and more people defend themselves these days. 70 year old store owners chasing after burglars firing shots at them. Interesting times.

Sorry about your troubles. The camera will be fine though.

We spent the better part of a YEAR cleaning our Digi-Beta cameras after a "Best Damned Sports Show" shoot with Tom Arnold... he instigated a pie throwing contest at a bar we were shooting at in Tucson! We'd clean the cameras with Q-tips and denatured alcohol (highly recommend that!)... and ever so often we'd see more stuff we missed the first, second, third, fourth and so on time we cleaned the cameras. It's christened now! The next thing won't seem so bad!

My first scratch on my Epic's EVF ticked me off something fierce... now I hardly notice it!

I'm happy you're alright... the Scarlet can be replaced, so long as you have insurance... you can not.

Be well. Stay safe. Keep shootin'!

Hopefully karma will catch up with them.

I bet the story went like this...:

The attacker woke up the next morning hungry, went to the kitchen to make some eggs and bacon, opened the fridge and "FCUK! No eggs! God damned..."
So he decided to go (still sleepy) to buy some more in his new car he just bought after a year of hard labor...
At the grocery store he forgot to lock his car (he was still sleepy and pissed off) and by the time he came back the car was gone...
So he had to walk back home...
Halfway he somehow managed to step on the egg-shell from the egg he threw at you yesterday, slipped and broke his leg...
On the way to the hospital in the ambulance he realized that his brand new car was not yet insured...
And... ...his Canon camera kit was in the trunk...
The end...

On a more serious note:

it seems like You were on the way out from Your shoot. I make it a habit for the camera to go straight back to its case when I am done shooting. The pelican is always near the camera, since I keep all the accessories and cables in it. It also doubles as a good chair on the set, when no "normal" chair is in sight. The camera is either working and supervised by me or the 1st AC, or it goes back in its case. Habit...

Hope You get it cleaned up. Do check with RED before you use any alcohol/chemical solution on it thou...

Peter

I don't know what I would have done in your situation, but it's safe to say the face of person with the egg would have somehow met the end of my right fist. Anyway, I hope
you get your Scarlet back to to the condition it was in and continue pursuing your passion.

Bastards, I hope they get whats coming to them, dont worry though these cameras are tough.

A couple of months ago my Epic was used for some octacopter scenes on a new Jackie Chan movie and the rig crashed and the camera rolled and toppled down a massive volcano in Vanuatu, octacopter rig smashed, lens smashed....the Epic came back dusty but after a decent clean thanks to the guys at Panavision it works fine without any issues.

I now have a kickass behind the scenes shot of my camera filming JackieChan for the better part of a second and then about 5 minutes of footage of the camera rolling down the volcano till it came to a stop ^^

Everything seems to be fine, except switching the camera to autofocus is causing the firmware to freeze. Does anyone know if this is a known firmware issue? I'm running the latest stable.
