  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

World's Highest Resolution Wedding Video Shot on Two Red Epics

There are a couple ways to approach vertical format stills. One is to shoot vertical! For fashion runway and in-store displays, I noticed these are being shot vertically.
Red has this in the works:

The second approach is like you said, through cropping.
Here is an example of print quality from a Red One still: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?48566-COACH...&p=639290&viewfull=1#post639290

I shoot anywhere from 5:1 to 12:1 depending on if I am shooting high speed 120fps. 5:1 is the sweet spot but 8:1 is nice as well. I think it depends on your "storage budget." =)

For the next shoot, I plan on using some portable LEDS with diffusion. This will primarily help in the situations where 1) we have time to place the lights and 2) it is appropriate to place lights. During the ceremony, however, you will have to pretty much deal with natural light depending on where it is. For example, you generally won't be setting up lights in a church. If you have fast lenses though, you can still get amazing shots.

be prepared to shoot between 1-2 terabytes depending on how much high speed shooting you do.

hehe, no secrets here! we are all learning.

Thanks for your thoughts. I sometimes do wedding photography, and the thought of cashing in the photography budgets as well is very tempting, it actually doubles the video budget brides have (at least where I live). I have to tell you, I am very scared to get into all of this: usually I just do fly in the wall doc style videos, taking charge of the official bride photography is a very different matter, you need direct as a still photographer....then there's the data wrangling, and the urgency to get over postproduction in order to liberate the hard drives from the staggering amount of data. Overall, I am still trying to decide...obviously it's a big investment that would eventually pay itself off, the funny thing is that for the type of docu work and the croporate clients I have, Scarlet IS the camera.

Anyway, great work Tonaci!

Nice work, but the pics look very electronic to me, i m thinking about to get some good old glass for my Epic:smile5:

Thanks Paul! yeah.. you will have blast shooting the wedding with the Epic. Can't wait to see the footage of your upcoming wedding job. =)
With the Canon mount shipping on the 9th, I definitely look forward to giving it a whirl on the next wedding shoot we do.

Hi Tonaci,

Great Wedding Video, best i´ve ever seen :)
Which lens do you use for that kind of work ? I assume you don´t have a focus puller running around with you all the time.

thanks
Manuel

We used Super Speed Mark I's, Tokina 11-16mm and an Angenieux 16-42mm.
Thanks for your kinds words.
For our next wedding project, we plan on using the canon mount..along with doing more moving shots, variety in real time along with high speed and timelapse shooting. =)

As for focus, my wife and I pulled our own focus. For the interiors, we shot wide open at 1.4 because we shot high speed most of the time.

Thanks everyone the amazingly kind words! yeah, shooting weddings is an entirely different experience from shooting feature films. It is really challenging. You only have one chance to get the key moments and you don't have much control over the lighting conditions hehe.
I look forward to shooting more weddings on Epic in between projects. We can't wait to shoot the next one! =)

Hi Tonaci,
This is amazing! I thought I was the only crazy Italian to have ordered a Scarlet for Wedding Filming but …wow .. now I know I was right.

I know what you mean when you say it’s a challenge for a one man per Red camera on a venue like a Wedding ! All manual! Things only happen once and you’ve got to ketch them right.

I can’t congratulate enough and I also can’t wait to post my first RED wedding video too.

Incidentally, did you use SSD only? Did you download files during the day to clear cards?

(I know it’s none of my business but I feel like a kid at Xmas since I am collecting my Scarlet next week!)

Excellent job!!!! Best grading and clean editing.
Lovely to finally see someone giving a Wedding Film the correct weight (importance)

(I’m trying very hard to hide my poor English being Italian )
