I will be working with some RED 6k footage in the future and A LOT with the 4.6k Blackmagic RAW compressed and Uncompressed footage in resolve and fusion. Here are my 3 options I am looking at. I want to stay in the 3500 price range.

1. Keep my 5,1 Mac Pro 2012.
12 core xeon 3.46
64gb of ram
Titan X (non pascal)
I love this computer but love the thought of have pascal graphics with windows. (I am a windows fan as I also game)

2. Get a A99 with the 6950x and 2 1080's

3. Go for 2 older used xeons and build a monster cpu beast with 2 1080's

What are your thoughts with the footage I am going to be working with along with working in resolve and fusion?

Thanks!

There is a general overstock of Xeon CPU'S in the market, perhaps because of consumer gush over the i7. The 6950's are premium priced right now. My instinct would be to exploit the cost savings of Xeon at bargain basement pricing. The Xeon's should stay marginally within the 6950's performance, and that being largely because so few applications are truly CPU optimized.

What Xeon in particular do you recommend? And should I go with a dual CPU setup or 1 Xeon on an x99 board (if that's even possible).

Regarding the Mac tower. It has been a formidable beast. It's the last of the Mohican's. The 12 core is still respectable for pushing around 6k footage, but the tech on the machine was circa 2009. Considering system BUS, RAM, and SATA speeds, it's days are clearly numbered. No hate for machine, it put a lot food on my table.

Indeed you are right. I love mine but honestly I just like the flexible of windows more. It is truly an awesome machine. When you say get an old Xeon which one would you recommend and also what motherboard would you suggest?
