Hi guys,

I have already found a lot of threads about this topic but they are a bit old and I guess there´s something new out there.

I want to build a workstation to work with Epic Dragon and Scarlet-W footage, what do you guys recommend? My price range is about 3000€ including the monitor.

If anyone can help me I would appreciate.

Cheers
Guilherme

I think to get a good answer for your unique needs you should let people know more about your workflow , programs you gonna use and even details as how much source r3ds you want to work on or how many pci lanes will be used up by your gpu, raid and monitoring card needs .... all this would end up in a slightly better computer ... for exactly your own needs.

To be honest i think you are on tight budget so you should think of what you already have (old pc/mac) thats worth upgrading or taking a view parts from to save some money and build a new pc. you might even consider a maxed out mac book pro or imac to include the monitoring and still have some budget left for a external storage solution that some people use for editing their r3ds from....

new cpus and gpus are on the horizont so you might be able to buy into a x99 platform with 6-8 cores cheaper and still be able to upgrad into 10 core league when you have more funds and prices go down in a year ...

you can also go to pcpartpicker and look for a i7 5960 build with gtx980ti for about 2000$ and ... then change the ram to likely max 64gb and add raid card for storrage with the rest of the money .... I hope you can find a cheeeeeap good monitor

Hi Flo, thanks for you reply!

Let me explain a bit better my workflow. I have 2 iMacs 5K i7 top of the line with 32GB Ram and SSD's for editing, I use Red Cine to do a first grade, Premiere to edit (normally with the r3ds files) and After effects for the final colour. Despite this workflow is working it´s really sluggish... I also have a pc i7 for 3D works and yesterday I tested with 6K footage and the difference to the iMac is huge! Much faster even with 3 layers in Premiere. And that pc costed me roughly 2200€ monitor included. So I´m interested on going the pc path. But I think I could make a better suited pc for editing. I just don't know what is best for editing, a good graphic card? Quadro? Or should I invest in the processor? Also about the disks and storage what should be better, data storage is also a problem... I have a lot of external disks...

If you could help me I would appreciate.

Thanks!
Guilherme

I think the reason it's sluggish his LITERALLY because you are cutting on Premiere. I have the exact same setup the only difference being I cut in FCPX and I never encounter sluggish issues. FCPX has a literal "switch" that goes from Proxy to Raw and back again anytime you'd like. It does this in the background, hence, cutting these files are not an issue, and mostly smooth as butter. Look into it, I think you will be shocked out the difference between cutting r3ds between premiere and fcpx on an iMac. It's quite frankly night and day.
