  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi all,
If you shoot 4kHD rather than 2:1 with the whole FCP proxies etc and the latest plugin will the 1/2 res just be a 1920x1080 timeline?

Does it behave just as normal 4K with fcp and colour just at 1080 rather than 2K ?

Cheers

Si

4kHD does indeed give H proxies which are 1920x1080. BUT the M proxies are 960x540 which is currently not a supported resolution for RT is FCP. Therefore you always need to render. My 8-core cannot get real time playback of a 1080p25 time-line with either M or H proxies in it. This means I find 4kHD is only useful in so far as you can render to 1080p in RedRushes using only a half de-Bayer or 50% scale with no crop, but I prefer the flexibility of shooting standard 4k 16x9 with a 4kHD frame guide and cropping in post, which gives the same result.

so if the final delivery is 1080P and apple color must be used for grading, its better to shoot 4k 2k 16:9 or 2:1 against 4k HD ??

4k hd doesn't work well, I mean it's difficult (impossible) to have realtime 24/25 fps playback.
There are different solutions but if you want to stay in fcp follow this workflow:
Shoot 16:9 4k and 16:9 2k then edit in fcp with 4k M proxies and 2k H proxies http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=22562 when you are at the run conform step in clipfinder adjust sequence to 1920x1080, import the xml to fcp, send the sequence to color, grade it, render to uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2 send back to final cut, check render all YUV material in 10 bit is enabled, choose export quicktime movie, enable make movie self contained, you will get a file with the icon of fcp but if you open it with quicktime is a quicktime movie, it's your 1080p master.
Hope this helps.
Ciao.

I thought I needed to stay at 2048x1152 in both fcp and in apple color and a final delivery in fcp for 1080p ???

So don't resize to 1080 p when you run conform, send to color, grade, send back to fcp, duplicate the timeline and on sequence settings set 1920x1080. Check all the clips are resized and export quicktime movie.

thank you very much for the info, when I am in done in color do I need to render to uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2 or do I just send to fcp?
