  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

It's been awhile since doing a red shoot; probably since the L&T plug-in came out!

Anyway i remember reading about a workflow that you could edit with your generated QT's from Red-Cine/Alert/Rushes etc. then thru an xml use L&T on just the clips you used to then bring full R3d colorspace functionality/support over to Color.

Unfortunately, i can't remember the name or URL for this workflow; can anyone help me out?

Thanks in advance,
~Thom

Yep!

Clipfinder will integrate the power of Red Alert and Red render engine in a fast and easy interface/workflow.

Work with proxies in FCP, export xml, import xml in Clipfinder, color correct first step,
render and encode, export new xml.(rendered clips location)

Import new xml in FCP, that's it!
...and then you can CC further in FCP or Color.

I see 3 major advantages to use Clipfinder over Log and Transfer in FCP:
1) You can use full debayer quality (although FCP half high debayer is very impressive and sharp)
2) You can work with 3K footage (say for your slow motion clips)
Color scale 3K footage to 1.5K !!!!
3) You have more output codec options (Color has very limited export codec options)

4. It's much faster on a beefy system (8-core with at least 16 GB of RAM).

if you're going to grade in Color, whats the advantage of using clipfinder over just editing with the proxies and sending to Color?

(note: I'd love to try clipfinder, but my machine is still runner Tiger)

well, if u are just send it from FCP to Color there is not such a advantage. But i think if u are grading with color to use the log and transfer workflow.

I think in Color you can use full debayer quality though (at least that is what the whitepaper suggests, so L&T > FCP > Color gives you full quality debayer. What i still can't control is the OLPF compensation and denoising. The denoising in RedAlert works wonders on the blue channel noise I see on lots of low-light footage, and I suspect Graeme Nattress has it optimised into the Red render engine in a way a plugin couldn't be.

I'm not sure I understand what you meant.

what i meant was, that u better work with the log and transfer workflow if u are just sending from FCP to Color. U don't need the clipfinder at all.

I understand you don't need clipfinder, but you don't need L&T either. If I drop my proxies into an FCP project, edit, and "Send to Color", Color grades off the .r3ds, not the proxies.

so my question is what is the advantage to clipfinder over that method.

the matter with L&T is more stable than the proxies, so if u have some time, and a bigger project, u better use L&T, but if u are in a rush, use proxies. And about the clipfinder, there is no such advantage in that method, in fact is a unnecessary step, so u can skip it. Or u can use it if u want to render some clips in ProRess or DPX to a comp software.

The advantage we're looking for is that we quick digitized our dailies thru RR so that we had the stability in editing of quicktime files in prores (rather than proxies) as we needed to do feature length multiclip editing (it's a musical).

We are now locking picture and going to vfx/color and I want the functionality of coloring with R3d files (selection of white point, ISO, etc etc etc) and heard somewhere that Clipfinder was capable of making an xml or edl capable of bringing over a digi-list back to L&T or just the proxies to color.

Hans,

I had a similar issue. Transcoded 3TB of R3D's (1400 shots) to 1k ProresSQ 422 rushes for the director to evaluate footage, takes, etc. The director created an excel spreadsheet for herself associating the take info with the R3D file name along with editorial notes. I wanted to use that spreadsheet to import the take info into FCP to save the editor some time organizing the bins with "logical" clip names rather than the arcane R3D name. Would clipfinder have helped me achieve my goal in anyway.

thanks

to solve my problem I ended up using excel macros to "build" the fcp xml to import....

Joyfool,

The current version of Clipfinder would not have helped you.
The next version of Clipfinder adds 10 custom fields for annotations and will import those fields into FCP.
You'd let the director enter annotations in Clipfinder and be done with it.
Mail me if you need a preview copy.

Cheers,
Hans

Thanks Hans,

I just gave the help section a quick once over and just wanted some verification on how to accomplish what i described above, replacing quicktimes with R3d for color. Should i follow the instructions for Conforming a final cut project? Also in order to grade in color with the red tab, do the proxies have to be brought in via L&T or will it read from camera generated proxies?

Sorry for all the questions, it's our first time using this workflow.

Thanks for your help!

UPDATE
Scratch that, no pun intended, RA regenerates proxies, I knew there was still a reason to have that program installed!

I think i've got it workingm just bring in the xml and reconform using one of the proxy settings seems to get me back to color with the naitive R3d intact, only problem, during editing some of the proxy files were deleted, is there anyway to regenerate them just to have something to reconnect to? The appropriate R3d file is still there, just not the proxy so Clipfinder fails conform on those specific clips.

Thanks,
~T
