Hello,

I have an editor who's looking to edit on his PPC Powerbook (G4 I think). There's going to be about 5 hours of rushes (could be more).

As far as I can tell it's not possible for him to edit with the proxies so just wondering if it's possible for me to batch convert to Pro Res here on an Intel MacPro , send him these QTs and then for him to send back the edited sequence (as an Interchange XML?) to conform here?

Is this possible and will a PPC Mac be able to handle ProRes?

Thanks.

Hi,
PPC might have some trouble with Pro Res, though technically it's possible. I would suggest sending as DV, which will also be half the file size.

Then they can give you back an EDL, which you can bring into RedCine using Crimson.

Just my 2 cents but I think it would be better.

Hope this helps.

Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks for that.

Just to make sure I understand - if I transcode to DV and ensure that all clip names remain the same I can then conform again to r3d?

I assume that Crimson would take care of any possible timecode issues brought about by framerate changes?

Also, is there a batch transcoding tool? I had a look at Red Alert and it doesn't seem to do batches. (its a pity there's no Compressor plug-in).

(Sorry for the torrent of questions....)

No problem at all.

There is a batch program. Look for RED RUSHES, it installs with Red Alert. You can transfer them all at once!

Yes, the timecode will match perfectly. This is what it's designed to do. It brings the EDL into RedCine and uses your original R3Ds.

It will keep the file names the same so you should be fine.

Do you mean you intend to change framerates or ramps etc? If so, don't do them in your offline (original Final Cut edit) as it WILL NOT WORK with Crimson. It will mess it right up. You need to do any ramping/frame rate changes AFTER you do your conform.

I'm not a Crimson expert so I'm sure more knowledgeable people will chime in.

Be sure to do some tests to make sure it's actually working before pushing 5 hours through.

Best of luck!

Jim

Excellent Red Rushes is great so thanks.

It doesn't seem to have an export to DV function but just wondering if anyone knows whether I can transcode the resultant ProRes QTs from Red Rushes into DV with Compressor and as long as all clip names remain the same will be able to conform these clips after the offline is done?

<phew!>
