  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Workflow to prep for finishing in Scratch

You are mixing two things - 4K playback in realtime, and 4K display at pixel-for-pixel. You are incorrect that the NVidia cards can't do 4K in realtime. They do. We have customers doing it every day. Whoever told you this or wherever you got this information - it is just factually incorrect. This is not a theoretical discussion. It's just wrong.
For 4K Playback out to a 4K projector, you are correct.
So, could you please decide if i am wrong or right?

NVidia doesn't do that... in realtime. But, the Quadroplex ModelIII can successfully feed a Sony SXRD in 4K. I've done it with SCRATCH. But it can't support realtime playback.
Once more: Clipster plays back, blurs and collorcorrects on 4k displays in realtime. Be it projector or monitor.

For you, perhaps. Several major post-production facilities with the money to buy whatever they want disagree. R!OT uses a 4K Resolve with a BarcoDP90. Modern Glendale uses an iQ Pablo and a Resolve with a Christie2K. Fotokem uses an iQ Pablo with a Christie2K. EFilm uses Lustre with Barcos. Technicolor uses Resolves and Lustres with Christies and Barcos. For you, perhaps this is essential. But for many others who are doing 4K post-production, it is not.
Lets not forget ESC (Matrix), Industral Light and Magic and the others using speedgrade.

Prices are not complicated. And you still have not emailed me offlist - as dozens of people from this forum have, and none have complained about the pricing structures I have given them. They are clear in what they do and how they do it. So I assume if 10K is your limit, then Speedgrade is also out of the running for you, since the HD version doesn't output at 2K or 4K, doesn't display at 2K and 4K, and doesn't play realtime at 2K or 4K. And the DI version is 40.000.
Luki, i don´t understand exactly why you are talking about iridas soeedgrade in such detail. To be precise: Iridas strong selling point is indeed that the HD version renders 4k. +

My budget isn´t limited for 10.000 a seat. As you know we also consider mystika and chrome. >100.000 space.

But i will hardly spent over 10.000 if i can get the system below 10.000, that you got right.

Well, I guess I can't win 'em all. I have a strong personality and strong opinions, but I am pretty rigid about my facts. And I know a lot about Speedgrade and SCRATCH. I've been living with both of those systems for years now. And when you say things that clearly aren't true, I can't help myself. Please share any comments you would like. I don't write things in public I am not comfortable with everybody reading.
Luki, don´t cross the line.
If you are accusing me to not tell facts in public, i will need to respond.

I -recommend- that you stop there.
I hope so.

I remember the time when, back then at my discreet logic times, 5D Cyborg was sold. I have heard some pretty bold statements back then. Lets not repeat that, shall we?

Does it really matter what computer you're working on as long as it does what you need it to do? I've had the opportunity to see the SCRATCH software in action and while I'm somewhat MACcentric I see no problem running it on a PC. Afterall, it's just a tool. Use the right tool for the right job. If you farm your project out to an editing house are you really concerned about what platform they're using or are you more concerned whether or not they can edit your project.

I guess if you're a one man band then, yeah, it might matter. But in the end, filmmaking is a collaborative effort with "experts" at each level doing their job.

ESC closed its doors in 2004, and no longer exists as a company. When they did and were working on The Matrix, they used Framecycler, not Speedgrade. ILM uses Framecycler Pro, not Speedgrade.

See above statement about ESC and ILM. I'm not saying you're deliberately distorting statements - but you do need to check facts more clearly before you post some things.

I didn't work for 5D when Cyborg was around, so I have no idea what bold statements were said back then and can't really comment on them.

ESC was formed to do matrix, and was not only using speedgrade but was the customer who started speedgrade.

Regarding ILM: There is no Product Framecylcer "Pro".
Maybe you are referring to Framecycler "DDS" or "professional".
ILM standardizes on Iridas. The speedgrade seats are an addition.

see above.
please stop lecturing me.
Get your facts straight.
Thanks.

5D was a manufacturer of plugins, mainly for discreet logic systems and eyeon digital fusion.

in ~1999-2000 (somewhen then) they introduced a DI/VFX systems, called Cyborg to compete with discreet, quantel, iridas etc.

That came somewhat surprising for their former "partners" at discreet logic and quantel. I had pretty similar exchanges back then with your precessor.

When they went bancrupt, discreet logic bought the intellectual property : Cyborg (they shelved it) and the OEMed DI system colossus (this is today the discreet lustre DI system).

From the remains of the dissolved 5D company, in ~2001-2003, two companies were founded; assimilate and speedsix.

edit: improved spelling.

Laguun,

Since you are nitpicking: the article you refer to doesn't state anywhere that ILM uses speedgrade. Just Framecycler. The only reference to Speedgrade in that pressrelease is in the description of IRIDAS as a company.

Barend you have some really great work on your site. Nice stuff.
