Hello all,

I need to convert some R3D files from an element shoot into Linear EXR files for compositing in Nuke. I'm trying to piece together a fairly simple workflow from a number of different sources, including this forum, and here's my understanding so far.

1) Using REDCINE (PC, v3.15) I'll import all my shots and load them into a timeline, one after the other.
2) The color space settings in the format settings box should be set to "REDspace" & "Gamma: REDLog".
3) I output the shots as 10-bit DPX.
4) I bring the shots into NUKE and use Stu's settings (0-1023, 1.02 gamma) for converting REDLog to Linear.
5) I can then save them out as a Linear EXR file from NUKE.

It's my understanding that this workflow should not compromise the integrity of the image. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I need to kick off this workflow to run overnight tonight.

Anthony,

The R3D files come into scratch as linear 12 bit files that you can save out into EXR files. You probably don't have SCRATCH, but you can do the same thing in Redcine. In REDCINE, the Project gamma can be altered using the Gamma pulldown in the PROJECT menu. Setting this to a CUSTOM gamma of 1.0 will make the .r3d images appear the same in REDCINE as they do in SCRATCH. Then just save your files out as an EXR sequence. This is much easier, and you get a higher quality of images, because they are not compressed to 10 bits.
