Hi,

I will be editing a movie shot on the RED ONE soon and I'm looking for the perfect workflow. I am editing on AVID Media Composer 3 and want to do color grading in Apple Color. Final output to HDCAM SR tape (1080i50) should be done in FCP (I don't have a Nitris system so FCP with Decklink card is my way to get the result on tape).

So far I've testet the following:
- transcoded the r3d files with Meta Fuze to DNxHD 40 for offline editing
- performed a test edit in Avid and exported an EDL (CMX3600)
- started up Apple Color and opened the EDL file
... and here's the point: how do I get Color to relink the EDL to the original r3d or online footage? Is there a way to do this? Or do I have to export HiRes Quicktime-Files with RedRushes and relink those?

Anyone experience with that workflow?

Best wishes
Alex

PS: My goal is a workflow that needs as little rendering/transcoding as possible and keeps the data management kinda simple, that's why I chose metafuze to get my offline data for AVID editing (so I can work directly with the MXF and don't have to import QT's into AVID)

The most recent MetaFuze adds the original file name in the Camroll column so when making an EDL, use that as source. How that gets connected properly in Color is another thing I am just starting to look into.

hmm... my camroll column is empty in text view of my bin...

Labroll? What version of MetaFuze? Did you create an ALE from MetaFuze?

if you did export a proper ale-with every r3d file getting his name
ingested in to the mxf, try duplicating the
tape colum by typing ctrl+d and duplicate it to the labroll or camroll heading then you can start exporting the edl from avid with the red16 template.
it has the complete full name of your r3d clips.
make sure that the show names is marked in the template's settings in edl manager.
and i think your good to go

do I have to use special settings in metafuze? normally i only open the r3d in metafuze and do a transcode of the 1080p25 file in dnxhd40. and then just export the ALE from metafuze and do the column thing?

Update

I've tried all the steps now, exported the ALE from Metafuze and imported/relikend it in Avid. Then I did a quick edit and exported the sequence as EDL with the Red26 preset and "camroll" instead of "tape" as reel ID type.

When I open the EDL in Color (import settings 25fps, 1920x1080, CMX3600), my timeline is empty. What could I have done wrong? Do I have to modify the EDL output settings somehow?

What type of EDL does Color support? I don't beleive it does the 16 character template. FCP uses a truncated file name such as (e.g. A001C001) from the original 16 characters.

Ran into same problem on feature that just wrapped last week.
We decided to cut in FCP instead which was the editors decision and the editor is a Union Editor for Sony all AVID so this was not easy but in the best interest of the workflow, and save us problems down the line.

Best luck to ya
Luis
