  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Wooden Camera aks

I've had the Red top plate on backorder for two months because it has a few more 1/4" 20 holes on the front and back than the Wooden Camera version, but the thought of receiving my order this week is definitely tempting me. I have the Wooden Camera A-Box and the build quality is awesome.

Im curious what makes people think they need a swiss cheese everywhere? What are you mounting on your cameras? Seriously? Take a good count in what you truly want to mount - when ever do you need 1000 holes everywhere? Sorry i hope I don't sound like an asshole, not meaning to be. I just see this trend of thinking swiss cheese everywhere and the truth is there's no way you need to mount that much.

Actually, the modular form factor as small as the footprint is, typically has users really customizing the rig. Other than stripped down, I think every Epic that I've seen is different and unique. It's not that you need to fill every hole, it's nice to have it in a location where you may need it.

"Swiss Cheese" keeps the weight down lets you decide where to mount later, in case you change your mind or add something new.

Well, it's not always the amount, but sometimes the placement. A DP I work with ordered the Red plate specifically for the holes on the front/back, which neither the Viewfactor nor Wooden Camera plates have.

EDIT: Also, more mounting points isn't always about mounting more stuff, but again where you're putting it. More points = more options, enabling more configurations. And as others have noted, it lowers the weight.

This is exactly right. The RED plate has holes in the front and back, which the other top plates don't. The rear holes specifically could prove very valuable in the future for mounting accessories flush against the back of the camera. And the RED plate is the same price as the Wooden Camera one. I just have to wait months for the damn thing!

I just want to also chime in with how great Wooden Cameras products and customer service has been. Everything shipped in a timely manner and the quality has been great. Others that have seen the accessories and were previously unfamiliar with Wooden Camera also thought the quality was great. Thanks for the great products and service, Ryan! Looking forward to what you have coming out next.

The Wooden Cam eye piece assembly does what its supposed to do orient and place the viewfinder where you want it, but i find where I want it varies just a bit and so the variability ie the length of the rod and slider could be almost half the size even for the smaller option, and then have less extra pieces of aluminum sticking out to jab you in the eye or not fit a space in a bag. also the swivel could be a little more complex in design so its a nice smooth rotation ready to move with your eye during a shot that has a big tilt. The red spinner is not a bad little part but seems overly complex for what it needs to do.

Its a form vs function issue that hasn't exactly worked its way into the box camera market. we have all these parts that tend to be rectangles and squares and 90 degree sharp edges, and Im longing for some shapes to conform here and there to imperfectly rounded humans. like when Aaton cam out with the LTR and likened the design to a cat sitting (conforming) on your shoulder rather then a box with a handle which was what some of the Arri stuff was like (arri 16BL). The Aaton was a revolutionary design with curves and a lovely handle that fit your hand, and the whole experience of Hand held was suddenly a new ball game. The Clutch is fantastic when adjusted properly, but its a very complicated bunch of parts needing adjustments to get to where its comfortable.

Seems with all the box cameras on the market and the bits to make them functional is somehow not as comfortable as what Aaton did 30 years ago. We have room for improvement in this arena. One guys opinion anyway.

Oh how I miss the simplicity of an Aaton on my shoulder. I find all the new hand held rigs overly complex. Aaton was so well balanced that just one wooden handle is all it took for a hand held rig that blows anything away I've seen recently. I personally think that cameras in the recent years have regressed ergonomically.

I only have the top handle (rubber) and the easy plate but so far it's been a pleasure working with Ryan. He's a great dude, and the products are great.

I got his top plate, bottom plate, 15lws and the quickback. I'm very happy with all of them. Great prices and super fast shipping. Looking forward to buying more goodies from Ryan.

Ryan is awesome. Excellent customer service and excellent products!

AMAZING products, fast delivery & GREAT customer service, he even replies to my non-sense random questions about configuration at 2AM on a Sunday! Now I feel guilty about it! Can't wait for what he's been cocking up for NAB, Shoulder Rig included :-)

This Thread helps me to decide on a purchase.
Thanks Guys
Lookn fw to know Ryan as well.
Cheers

I've ordered some gear. Should arrive next week. Ryan's been great to deal with.

Just chiming in to say a VERY positive experience with Ryan and Wooden Camera. Talked to him about his upcoming shoulder rig on the phone, nice guy, very helpful. Shipping was lightning fast and all products pristine and extremely well packed.

Wanted to chime in and share some images of the kit Ryan has helped me put together. Everything is WC AKS, including a custom evf mount he built for me (mates with Red's spinner, not photographed).

Awesome gear, awesome guy.

Cheers,

Love my WC gear. and +1 on Ryan's customer service. The leather handles are so awesome. I have the top/side leather handles. Top, bottom plate, 19mm baseplate, A-box, and the battery V-mount system. All top notch.
