  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"Women Have it Easy" - Scarlet X Short

Honestly, I found the guy's "constipated" faces to be the funniest part of the short. This woman is going on this ridiculous rant and he's making even more ridiculous faces. I dig. Nice work. Agree on the lighting but hey ya can't win em all :) Good short!

i think there are many ways to watch a scene...technical, artistic and asthetic etc.. focus on technical and asthetic: its "beta" ;) but your intent was to make a test shot...right? so nothing to nag about :) shoot shoot shoot!

Really seems too dark and noisy. Was this shot at ISO800? Any grading? This seems like a good example of the type look you would not want to shoot at ISO800 for. I've seen references that Social Network may have shot at ISO500, and Cronenweth also mentions using an 80D filter in GWDT which he may have also done in Social Network. This also seems like an example of one of the issues with RED's gamma curves in that they have a very high black level which hides your noise by reducing the contrast of your shadows and making images look a bit muddy. Once you set your black level properly in grading suddenly you start seeing a lot of noise you didnt realize was there since the contrast of your noisy shadows is increased. For this reason, I would recommend trying to set a custom curve to set your contrast and black level properly in camera so you can better judge your noise level when monitoring and lighting.

too dark, too much noise. nice framing though and overall composition.

Thanks! Thats really what I was trying to achieve. I'm a huge fan of lighting techniques used in The Social Network, GWTDT etc so that is what I was going for.

It looks nothing like Social Network, its more alluminated so the camera can see something rather than creatively lit.
Your playing safe, that never looks good just safe & really boring, you need to hire a real DP.

...next time I have a big budget camera test shoot I'll be sure to hire a DP. Thanks.

I appreciate that. Thanks. Its true, we pulled the whole thing off in a little over an hour so as much as I appreciate critiques from people, understanding the other complications such as time limit, no crew or budget should be kept in mind when nagging. Again I appreciate all the feedback.

I certainly appreciate the limitations of production. There are a couple simple things that would not have taken any more time that would have helped you get a lot closer to the look you referenced though. First off, that low key look is best achieved not as much by low light levels but by far side keys and contrast. Looks like your key is right next to camera so everything is just very flat. Flat and underexposed will just look dull. I'd put your key over your male lead's left shoulder for a far side key and walk it in a little to make sure even though your levels are low, your subjects pop out a little more than the background.

Thanks for the suggestion Noah. I look forward to trying that technique next time.

Stephen common...
What kind of comment is that. A 'real DP'.
Everyone has to start learning somehow.
But I guess you are a born 'real DP'.
