  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

With the new price of Scarlet how much will an indie kit cost?

When Im asking this question I clearly mean how much will a bare bones kit with no lenses (Since I have my own), cost. Im not looking for answrs of how some people will trick theirs out or their personal view.

I just want to know the absolute minimum pieces to make the Scarlet work. Once you get the base set and learn how to use it I feel you can always add other parts later.
So any suggestions would be great. I assume you need the following,

Scarlet
Battery (or 2)
CF card (Do only Red CF cards work?)
Monitor option

What else am I missing?

Hi Michael,

It is my understanding that you will need the following.
1.) Scarlet Brain
2.) CF module (side mount version)
3.) Battery
4.) CF Card
5.) Monitor
6.) Possibly a lens mount depending upon your choice of lenses if the default does not meet your needs.
7.) Currently undisclosed method of attaching the battery to the brain. I have not seen this detail answered yet. One could also use a side handle that I believe holds a single battery and also provides additional controls. I have read somewhere that the camera can be operated without a Redmote or handle but I'm not sure at what level of control.

It should be noted that the undisclosed battery attachment option that I mentioned was supposed to be part of the fixed Scarlet kit and I'm assuming it would be available separately as well. If not then the handle is an option . Other than that you probably would need a rear battery module and an adapter module.

That is my understanding of what the minimum kit might be. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I think a Scarlet 2/3" fixed will be about $6000.

The S35 Scarlet should run you around $12000- without lenses, but most everything else you need to work.

You need:

Scarlet Brain
i/o module
recording module
some recording media
battery module
batteries
at least one LCD or EVF.

That's a dead minimum configuration though.

You need to add a RedMote realistically.

I'd add a Pro i/o module and a Pro RedMote.

The S35 Scarlet will come with a PL mount... if you want to use SLR lenses you'll need to buy the appropriate lens mount.

Here is the "November 30th" announcement thread. It has prices and specs.

Here is the feedback thread... lots of discussion and Q&A

The prices of the various Scarlet brains all increased $1000 due to the addition of the HDRx feature- a real bargain when you know what it is.

Also remember that the Red CF cards are the only ones that work well
and each 16gb flash card records about 8 minutes of 4k (varies of course
depending on your Red Code and frame rate). Each card is $300.

I imagine most people -- even small budget Indie folks -- will need at
least 4-5 cards, so that's another $1200-1500 right there.

Hopefully, the SSD module will be ready by then -- we have the price
for that -- but not sure if that includes the Red-compatible SSD drive
or how much that will cost.

Of all the professions, it's hard to imagine one more expensive (in terms
of equipment). There's always something else to buy .... :emote_head_explode:

8 min. at 4k... What about at 3k? And possibly lower data rate red codes. Can you use standard cf cards then? I'm going to be shooting some long form performances.

In terms of 3k, I'm going to try that for something I'm doing for the
web on Monday. The 8-minute number is what I got from the guys
working in the Red store in Hollywood. Again, I think it varies a lot
depending on how you set up the project.

If you're shooting 3k and lower Redcode, you may be able to use other
CF cards ... I will let a Reduser with more experience on that front post
about that.
