Hey all,

First off - this is a truly fantastic forum. I am thankful for everything this community has built.

My question -

I am looking into getting a small wireless follow-focus system for my Epic. I was wondering if anyone here had any advice, or feels strongly one way or another about the things I've listed below.

Here are the items I've been considering:

Monitor:

SmallHD AC7 OLED SDI $999

(with AB gold mount)

Wireless Transmission System:

Teradek $2490

Ghost Eye $1999

Paralinx Ace (SDI) $1799

Wireless Follow-Focus:

Redrock Micro $2720

DJI Follow Focus $1999

Thanks in advance for your time, I truly appreciate it.

I own a AC7 OLED and have been very happy with it. Absolutely gorgeous screen! Ive had clients tell me it looks better then their 17" Panasonic client monitors and asked to use it instead. My only recommendation would be to get the cannon battery plate instead because the AB plate with a battery attached is uncomfortably heavy.

I've used the Teradek Bolt before and it's solid, does exactly what you'd expect. I haven't used either the ghost eye or the new Paralinx unit but Paralinx has a well deserved good reputation in the lower end wireless Tx/Rx world so I wouldn't be worried about investing in one of their newer products.

As as far as the WFF goes, the red rock system is decent but not amazing. Super easy to setup though which is a bonus and very light as well. The DJI unit is an interesting newcomer. I would definitely keep my eye on it. But, if it's anything like the RONIN support, be prepared to wait weeks or months to get a problem fixed.

Hope that helps!

I would stay away from the red rock. It is not a professional unit and is seen as such by focus pullers.

I don't mind the RedRock system. The motor is kind of junk, but I replaced it with a Heden M21VE and that made a huge difference. The wheel on the remote has nice damping and is smooth, the finger wheel works great on my gimbal.

Honestly, I've had far better luck with the RedRock than I the times I rented a Bartech from one of our local rental houses. RedRock isn't the best but it's been good for the price.

go bartech for the follow focus man. and the ac7 oled is great, I own one. I would deff prefer SmallHD's new line of brighter better monitors with custom lut features. Teradeck is the way to go.

Regarding follow focus, RT Motion, awesome system. I think it depends on where your at with buying gear. I've learned the lesson. I only buy the good stuff now. That has changed as my career has advanced, stuff just has to work, on multiple systems/setups, every time. You can't get that with the cheaper systems. Buy once, cry once.

Hey everybody, as some of you might know, DJI introduced the Focus at IBC w/ the MSRP of $1,999. This thing is pretty amazing, super responsive, high torque, and best of all, MDR built into the motors. I'll be traveling around U.S. starting next week, if anybody wants a hands on demo, please let me know. Industry standard quality at an affordable price.

Hi Willis,

0.35 Nm doesn't seem to be that high torque - is there another model with a higher torque?

One thing to think about with the MDR being built into the motor, is that if you upgrade to a better system later you can't keep the motor. If you get a stand alone motor, it will work with any of the industry standard systems in the future. I recently got a red motor and I have to say I love it. I've used it with both the digital bartech system and the Preston.
