I was at my local Best Buy today looking for a mobile platform to run Premiere, Speedgrade, After Effects, Photoshop, REDCINE-X, and Davinci. It seems that laptops have come a long way since the release of the MacBook Pro Retina and have even exceeded the specs with exception of the display for a lot less money. I was curious, has anyone tried Windows 8 yet? I was a bit annoyed when they told me all their laptops are now running Windows 8, no Windows 7. Microsoft always seems to switch operating systems just after software companies have added support, and after they've worked out all the bugs. I could care less about Windows 8, I just want my software to work the same way it's been working on Windows 7, should I be concerned? Would anyone recommend Windows 8?

Claims I've heard are that Windows 8 is based on Windows 7. I have no first hand experience (yet) so I can't say for sure if it works the same but I'm counting on it doing so.

I've heard the same, that they simply made it tile based, but I haven't heard of anyone trying it out yet. I'm a little hesitant to try it out myself.

The Adobe software suite works fine with Windows 8. I've been running it for a couple of months now on my laptop using the last preview version before they released to manufacturing.

Once you hop back to the old desktop mode you'll find it all works pretty much the same barring the missing Start menu (replaced with right side "charms" menu).

HTH!

Paul :)

No Brainer Buddy, is just Windows 7 with a new touch screen interface oriented to tablets and mobile devices.
64bit support and multi core CPUs capabilities are enhanced thou.

Sounds good, happy to hear it's working for others. I think I might give it a shot.

Windows 8 is good so far. Very painless to upgrade a Windows 7 install. RED Cine-X Pro seems fine, Adobe CS6 apps seem fine. Rocket on latest firmware/drivers seems fine.

If you're not sure, try running the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant (Google it). It'll give you a report and give you a pretty good idea if are any hardware or software incompatibilities on your personal computer before you need to make any decisions on if you want to buy it/try it.

Every new version of an OS begins with the previous version. e.g. Winows 8 started with Windows 7. Windows 7 started with Vista. Vista started with XP. XP started with Windows 2000. Windows 2000 Started with NT 4.0. NT 4.0 started with NT 3.51. NT 3.51 started with NT 3.5. Same logic applies to Apple for all OS X releases.

Windows 8 is akin to Snow Leopord in that a lot of time was spent optimizing the OS. It now uses less memory and runs faster than Windows 7. These are not small differences. In addition there is the new full screen start menu and the modern app programming model that most people associate with Windows 8. Most of the changes were under the hood and for the better. The UI change are another matter...

Hope this helps.

I've been using 8 for a while now, from the Developer Preview on essentially, and nothing has given me any issues with the final release build. All the RED workflow software runs just fine and in many cases actually faster on the same system compared to when it ran 7. THe only issue I ran into was getting my Rocket installed. Win8 wanted to find drivers for it, so it kept crashing my machine until I removed the card, installed the drivers, and the reinserted the card. After that everything has been solid including CS6, all RED products, R3D DM, and a couple other little utilities I use.

Lightworks does not run under Windows 8.

Lightworks runs just fine under Windows 8. It is the installer that fails at version check, but switching Compatibility Mode to Windows 7 does the trick. Once installed the app itself works exactly as it would under Windows 7 with slightly faster launch and encode times.

I'll try that. Thanks for the tip.
