  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will we ever need more than 1080p?

I recently decided to jump on the HD bandwagon after seeing some very impressing images on some HD TVs....
I caught a special offer and bought a 32" full-HD TV and a HD-DVD player ... The quality is incredible!!! The difference between my old 22" SD TV and this is astonishing! I know that HD-DVD is the future, but I'm wondering - will more resolution will be needed in the far future? And on what kind of TVs we will view more than 1080p?

:)

I expect you will have an abundance of answers swarming your way.

More resolution is in the near future. (well, really it is now.)
Also, the DVD's being used now are called Blue Ray. They are HD images but not really referred to as HD-DVD because that was a competing media disc at one point.

Because of consumption HD will be in for a while longer but you can believe that it is in-fact on it's way out.
2k, 4k, 6k+

HD-DVD? Thats a dead standard. And your only getting into the HD game now.. your behind the curve man, way behind it =)

In the home? Not really... considering the amount of films made over the past 20 years which have been done in 2k it could be a while before we see 4k outside the theaters... that doesn't mean it won't happen but I expect blu-ray will be around a long time before that happens.
a lot of people here are excited about the 4k future however I think until Panavision does the 4k Genesis you will still see a lot of major films being shot natively in 1080p.

I've said this a few times... 4k in the home will only become mainstream when the Sports networks take up that format. I don't think it will happen for some time yet.

1080p 3D seems to be the next move for the sports broadcasters.

Well.....we are pretty poor in my country...The HD just started to catch here and the TVs and HD-DVD players were simply too expensive for most of us.. Anyway - do we really need 4k?? I mean the quality I get from my TV now is simply amazing...What's the point of more resolution?

4k resolution to produce quality images on theater-size screens. Though lots of people use their REDcams to produce HD or similar deliverables, the REDcam was made to produce theatrical films on large screens where HD does not have the resolution to produce a sharp image

What country are you in? This sounds like something from 2006-2007.

Romania...Hey, lots of people still use VHS and audio-cassettes here especially in the rural areas. My grandparents didn't have a color TV until 2001.

First things first we need *REAL* 1080p.

I'll start discussing the need for 4k in the home when they start delivering real 1080p in the home.

After it's been run through broadcast compression what you're seeing on TV now is a very poor 1080p presentation.

as americans i think we do get jaded and blind to everything we take for granted technology wise even though it's so much different than in some countries (not to mention that we're behind some).

I don't think we really need 1080p TV. I can count the number of good TV shows on one hand.
We need 4k in the home. Just not 4k TV.

I believe home 3d will come to the mainstream well before 4k. It's already happening with Samsung's new TV's. I'm already seeing tv commercials for them.

Way to be way behind the times....like...way behind.

HD is nice and all, but 4K is nicer still. If you want to see a great HD film in the home, pick up the blu ray version of Avatar, which is the best quality blu ray I have seen so far.

Television has ALWAYS supported lower resolutions as the norm... to yes, many people still watch SD television, and HD is 'enough' for them.

However, the theater experience, we see otherwise. 35mm film prints to 1080 is a big drop, imo. I think for a screen that size and a presentation as such, we need higher resolutions... ok, maybe not need considering 2k projection is 'ok' and is only slightly larger than 1080.... but I think we SHOULD have 4k-6k and etc for feature film presentation.

Personally I couldn't care less about more resolution.

There are more important things to address such as COLOUR rendition and strobing caused by a slow refresh rate of current technology.

We should be asking for 10 bit screens becoming the norm not asking for even higher resolution than we can perceive without having a 150 inch screen in front of us.

So much of the HD televisions out there are utter crap that pale in comparison to their CRT counterparts. The only real progress in quality is the size of the screens compared to the real estate they occupy plus of course the detail available at affordable prices that HD resolution offers.

In Germany, HD broadcasting has officially begun this year. The biggest cable TV provider still does not offer all the existing HD programs. Full HD screens are more or less just being sold because of the soccer worldcup but other than that, most people aren't really interested.

And I wouldn't consider Germany to be a backward country generally :)

My 50" Plasma arrives tomorrow :emote_popcorn:

No I wasnt talking about broadcasting but rather HD-DVD vs Bluray.
Broadcasting is still behind in most of Europe. (Speaking as a European)

Well....it's pretty obvious that HD-DVD is the future...The quality is amazing, much better than the regular DVD and the HD players are selling like hot-cakes here!
