  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will we ever get a All jn One Film'n'Burn camera again, under $4k?

When will we ever get a 4k all in one camera again like the RedOne or Scarlet fixed, with what I call Film and Burn like a Sony 4k prosumer, in camera auto style grading, hand footage clips straight over or burn it to disc if you want. Red code can still remain the codec of choice for this, or h264. In this low end market segment a lot of work does not want to have to grade anything, just edit it.

Another thing I mentioned years ago us coming out with the recent macmini altasens SI based camera, in camera editing (and presumably grading). Running Linux, or android in camera, editing and grading software can be installed for field work. The software also being able to be sold for Android tablets or desktop PC/mac (Linux) to users of other cameras.

With snapdragon 800 arm processor, we are approaching the time where a $4k or less 4kp50 fixed lens camera, maybe with isee3d, can be cheaply made with superior performance to the competition. Years ago I pointed out a experimental prototype compact lens design. This week Panasonic is supposed to be releasing a mini m43 camera with different compact low profile zoom lens. Do a weather sealed removable compact m43 lens camera used instead of a fixed lens allowing m4/3rd and s16 and 2/3rds lens to also be used. A real disruptive player. Principally a pro video work camera with cinema performances sold underneath the Scarlet to people not likely to buy a Scarlet.

Principle accessories are a shoulder mount compact eng body and controls, and rail rig, and DSLR body (slot the brain box out of the prosumer body into the dslr). Pro sumer camcorder factor as standard with weather proof lens. While people can try to sell cinema cameras under this price, Red could instead sell what people in this market really want, ready to use production tools. The scarlet and Epic renaming the quality for price Cinema cameras.

Kisash principle. 'Keep it Simple (but sophisticated) and Sell Heaps'.

He he he, been thinking if it would be worth physically hacking a gopro4 to do something. But for some inexplicable reason the ambarella ultra HD camcorder chips have not been released, the security camera version was announced a year ago. 50fps versions optionally with h265 would make way more sense. and we are due got the next ambarella chip set with possibly one of these or lower power, but who knows when that will release. I imagine that they might have capacity constraints, or not enough orders to manufacture the part in enough quantity to reduce cost of production, or other reason. It could be that there are now options manufacturers are looking at. Shame, the industry was on s hood thing with Ambarella. It should be relatively easy in design terms to make an ambarella camera record uncompressed, which means that it should be relatively easy to make s more professionally featured cameras like the BMPCC but better with higher frame rate and 4k and 16mp 30fps plus raw closer to $500. I'm sorry for all the new small camera makers in this industry doing it tough against the big boys in the wrong way. Trying to do your own software could take up half of your design budget, and trying to do your own circuit/chip/FPGA designs could also rake up half your development budget, when you could do all development and manufacture setup for s tenth the cost at a fraction of the manufactured price. Over at dvinfo and now apertus had multiple groups doing open software for recording camera control. The 'industry' just to point it out, could do there own codec, software, circuit design and reference camera design and based their cameras and design and feature differentiation on that. We have had much foolish, even very foolish self centered behaviour against others trying to do it best for the community rather than support what's best for the community and a firm basis for cost competitive quality behaviour like a free open reference platform. Red could 'Afford' to do it differently and generate the volumes to pay for the customizations, good luck for them. But underfunded armatures trying to do this is trouble for them. Red's refusal to release a low cost all in one fixed 4k p50 (or just 3k on time) camera is a cause of this. I stopped planning developing my own camera when I heard of the scarlet, which seemed to be referred to as a pocket the previous year after I raised the idea to Jim. Most of these companies should have not started/packed up and gone unfunded. My one ideas have always been years and years ahead of the industry. Such a waste having the threat of the the higher volumed fixed sucking all the room out of the market, but then never delivered after so much time frame to do something has run out.

Some ideas, black box api and plugins for everything, allowing people to swap in new versions at will. Heavy use of open standards in particular OpenCL code to allow simple reuse between platforms (Linux, Windows, Android, Mac/IOS, Java). That's just the software side running on cheap hardware.

I forgot, this is where the Apertus software and axiom 4kp100 hardware could come in if it could be designed to host different sensors as new ones come. The other side is cineform's codec, that has been moved into a standard, something like that would be valuable depending on licensing.
