this is a screencap NOT shot on RED.

Does this happen with RED? Anyone test this?

I am familiar with Macgregor's black sun spot problem, which seems to be partially fixed.

But the vertical line?

that's the digital version of the event horizon phenomenon that happens exactly at sunset. :)

ya. I have seen sunsets with RED for sure. but am curious if the banding line happens with the X cameras when shooting at direct highlights (like fire) or something like the sun near the horizon.

Mike,

I believe this issue has been solved. In fact I have shot directly into the sun on Red, and I did not experience this vertical line.

As far as your first image, that is a different phenomenon called vertical smear specific to certain kinds of CCD chips. You will not have that experience on RED.

Dalsa is a CCD camera, but it does not have this phenomenon either, because it uses a mechanical shutter to protect the sensor during readout.

It is probably worthwhile to separate "current problems" from "solved problems". Some time ago, Red had an issue where bright lights very close to or exactly on the edge of the frame caused a vertical streak artifact. My recollection is it's been fixed with the "X" revision camera bodies (upgrade to #1-100) and the fix was designed-in from the factory on all other serial #s. Don't have time to find the exact post, but the problem was listed as solved by one of the Red team, as I recall shortly before firmware #13 came out.

ya Jarred posted that that had been fixed, I do remember now, thanks Ian, your confirm is as good as anyone from RED I think, thanks!

It is definitely an issue fixed, two examples:

Elcurado, thanks for this post.... I almost want to believe it... but the Sun compared to a 1K or 2K is a bit of a stretch, have you done a similar shot like the top one? this is really helpful, so thank you.

no problems with sunset here... just shot a few days ago, build 15.something.
It's not that bright, but hey it's a sunset.

Just to clarify:
the black sun is there, not already fixed.
I'm pointing that there are no more vertical lines...
