  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will there ever be a Scarlet?

Aww cut some slack. Each thread that comes out has a different tone

There is nothing different about it, that is ultimately the point. I've been here less than a year and in that time we have had this discussion in hundreds of iterations. Yes, even the brilliant "Double edged sword of effective marketing." idea has been well represented. All of the banter leads inevitably to the same place; Nope there is no Scarlet yet, and we really don't know quite when it will get here.

No Zack NO! Every time you stop believing in Scarlet a RED fairy dies.

Thats right. But the answer to the question is

No. Scarlet will never exist

..although its hard to tell whats true and whats malicious lies designed to wrong foot potential customers when dealing with the Red Scam Man and his army of Red pixel pixies, scarlet is an unlikely product, given that all they've managed to produce so far is a Red One and a few Epics.

Worth remembering.. ..all the Red pixies are trained to lie and have small red cars to escape in should law enforcement officials turn up mid scam, so pay using your credit card to be safe :auto:

The only thing I would fault Red for is they had such a big event where it is clear that thousands of potential customers are expecting a huge update on the scarlet. I can't fault them if they don't have update to give. I do however wish they had just said that they where not going to have an update and instead concentrate on the epic when it was clear what many of us expected.

They made it very clear Addison that this was EPIC-centric. Yes, Scarlet may seem like it's on the backburner or whatever people are saying these days, but RED made it clear on Nov. 30th that EPIC-X was the hardest camera for them to make (in the MX-lineup) so they were going to start with that one and everything thereafter would be easier to complete (and might even get stuff that it wouldn't have gotten if the EPIC-X hadn't gone down the development tube first.

I expect a Scarlet when RED is ready to ship them. Sure, NAB would have been a great time for them to shed some light on it BUT they are not ready too yet so why constantly ask and ask and ask when will they release info or IF it'll ever get made when YOU KNOW that they are working their asses off to do stuff beyond our imagination and they will release info when THEY are ready, as they have always done. I'd rather have a no compromise camera because they took their time (even though they are going FAR faster than most people realize) than having people whining about how long it took to get the Scarlet out there so they just skipped a few things (like lines on a 7d or what have you) just to get it on the market.

Just ride the wave guys. It's fun...and if you need something now, GET SOMETHING, and buy the Scarlet when its here.

Over and out.

That is great advice for the ones that have the money to do just that. I am however in with the folks that unfortunately do not. Don' t get me wrong, I enjoy "ridding the wave" and have now for a while. All I am asking is for a formal idea of when we might expect something. How hard could that be? Please note that this is not a bashing of the company. I happen to love red, so much so that I have things on hold in the hopes to one day have in my hands a brand new Scarlet S35. I just want to know if that wait will be 6 months, a year or even more.

I have a lot of warm feelings and admiration for what they are doing. These seem like the cameras that I've been waiting my whole life for. It is with all due respect that I say; If they want me to believe that the Monstro will come any easier, or more quickly than the MX, then I hope they won't mind if I remain skeptical.

I was going to upgrade from my current 1/3" DV camcorder to a similar HD model the year that Scarlet was first announced, but decided to wait. I'm still waiting because Scarlet seems like it will be the first affordable (for me) digital motion camera that could equal or beat the performance of 16mm film cameras, a format I love. Been waiting for a practical digital replacement for a 16mm Bolex for 30 years.
Nothing under $20k introduced or announced by any other manufacturer since has been interesting enough or good enough to change my mind.

Jim said during one of his round table Epic talks that the Scarlet is 2 months behind the Epic. That means if the Epics start rolling out June-July like he hopes then the Scarlets will be out Aug-Sep...

Here's hoping they make it by then. :thumbup1:

Red's best advice has been to advise the Scarlet waiters to go away for a proven product THAT WORKS TODAY...

Now that Panasonic and Sony (and Canon coming shortly...) are aiming at the $5-10K independent filmmaker space as just announced at NAB,
you'll have plenty of options if Red's approach is less than your cup of tea-
Remember, they OWE you nothing...

Either way, expect the Scarlet variants by NAB 2011 in volume and potential price reductions
if the serious competition and A/B shootouts don't go their way...

April 2011 NAB comparison footage will be better than watching Godzilla take on King Kong on Beta...

Thank you Peter for bringing some relevance and quality back to this thread.

Anytime buddy.

Basically Peter, you are saying that you do not have the money to buy something now...totally fine and very common, however, how will KNOWING when you'll have a brand new S35 in your hands make you have more money? If anything you should be hoping for a year so that you can save up that money (I've spent the last 2.5 years diligently saving every spare penny I have and I barely have enough to get a decent Fixed shooting package, I know how it feels).

I know that it would be nice of RED to say here is a formal idea (which btw, is a paradigm) of when the Scarlets are coming out, but here's the situation, they don't know. They can give you a rough estimate (like they have been for awhile now) but they don't know...and when they do know...they will tell you. I can guarantee you that.

Amazing

Amazing

This thread is fully functioning as group therapy for the obsessive, must have it now segment of our inner-capitalist psyche...
Look at what all the marketing has done to us!

:violin:

Aren't there better things to do like, um I don't know... coming up with amazing movies to shoot?

I don't think he's saying he doesn't have enough money for Scarlet.

I have a feeling these zillion dollar, 300lb, 1440x1080 into a codec that makes JPEG look like uncompressed 4:4:4, more cables and wires going in random directions than Frankenstein's monster, make-DSLRs-from-1997-look-hi-tech monstrosities that people are shooting with today are going to have a resale value of about $14.95 when Scarlet/Epic arrive.

So if you buy one of them with the intent to buy a Scarlet/Epic later, you better have the money for both. I think he's saying he only has the money for one.

Err, actually, I don't know if that's what he was saying, but that's how I feel :)
