  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will the DSMC still camera compete with cameras such as the Nikon D3X ?

DSMC will be heavier, but it can be ergonomically configured like a DSLR

If by "ergonomically like a DSLR" you mean "in the general form factor of a DSLR."

Jim posted one the other day in fact: http://www.redgrabs.com/up/1240331433.jpg

As far as ergonomics, the grip of a DSLR is contoured for your hand and padded. The RedHandle is another metal rectangle. Operating the former for an entire four hour football game makes my hand sore. I'd hate to imagine doing it with the latter.

Also the viewfinder being off the focal plane is going to create a major learning curve for action where you have to follow a running player or something.

I still think of these as motion picture cameras primarily,

Yeah, that's the point I'm trying to make, since many people think they're going to be king of both hills.

I would definitely configure a balanced shoulder rig for long event shooting hand held, or use a monopod like I see a lot of sports photogs doing with long lenses. We haven't seen the final designs and module options yet, so the handles may be better than they seem from the renders. For my taste, ENG video camera ergonomics are highly evolved for run and gun shooting, better than just about any still camera.

You will be viewing the output of the sensor itself at the focal plane on an EVF or LCD. I have shot action with video cameras quite a bit and never found the EVF orientation to be a problem. Most often for shoulder rigs, it is at eye level and the right eye is viewing the EVF image while the left is viewing the scene for action outside the frame.

The main DSMC advantage is being able to do both motion and stills with equal quality with one camera system. Even if you are only publishing stills, for fast action shooting like sports the full motion framerates should be a real boon. But no single camera or system can be perfect for everything. There are always compromises to be made.

I wish there was a cheap 120fps 3K s35 or FF35 options, maybe that would be higher latitude. With 2/3rd inch you are talking about super fast f0.96 lens for really good DOF, which may work on the old fill factory IBIS5a sensor but has problems for normal sensors.

A side note, the sensor technology used in the Red was to be previously announced, which company was it?

Thanks

Wayne.
