  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will Peter Jackson Use RED for "The Hobbit?"

Personally I'm less bothered about what it's shot on as to why it's being made into two movies. It smacks of making as much money out of the book as possible and as our friend Han would say "I've got a bad feeling about this". I can't help but feel there is going to be a great amount of butchering of a book that I've always greatly enjoyed - Can anyone please point out a suitable point in the Hobbit that would make for a decent climax for a first installment? Sorry to drag the discussion off topic there :)

From what I understand, they won't make 2 movies out of the Hobbit book. They'll make one movie about The Hobbit, and a second movie that ties the Hobbit movie to the LOTR trilogy. So they won't cut the Hobbit in half to make two films. They will come up with more story to fill the gab between the books.

since we're way off the trail and wandering around in the forests around Arda anyways, what gap between the books? It all seemed fairly fluid to me...

I have no clue. But isn't there a significant time gap between The Hobbit and Fellowship? I've heard rumors that they might use stuff from the LOTR appendices and the Silmarillion as inspitation, but right now it's anyone's guess.

Regardless, as long as it's good, I don't care what they make up!

60 years.

The thing is, I don't think anyone worth making a movie about happened in-between and I think the mid-quel is a mistake. But if it's good, no complaints.

but can't hobbits be hundreds and hundreds of years old? meaning that time might be perceptually faster for them.....so maybe it'll be "a day in the life" or "frodo unexpectedly goes on a serious bender"....which could entail an morning outing picking berries for the crotchety baggins that goes horribly wrong when Frodo gets lost, meets a circus girl who drags him into a short period (ie. somewhere around 60 years) where he ends up as a side show at major folk festivals, uses way too much St. John's Wart and oil of oregano, and eventually has to be brought back to the village by baggins in disgrace....and the only way to erase the disgrace is to save the village vis a vis LOTR trilogy!

Ahhhh, how's that for ya Dorkman? Mid-quel still a mistake?

There's plenty of material in the appendices to Lord of the Rings and also major plot points alluded to in The Hobbit that could provide a jumping off point for a second film. I agree with Paul though, they want to make two films 'cause of the cash!

Oh yeah, Jackson has confirmed that he won't be directing them.

That's fine that the RED has symbolic value... but when it comes to deciding how to shoot a movie, practical values like, well, how the image looks matter more.
I agree. As you will notice I was quoting myself and dumbing down any possible "negative" connotations, so as to prevent the resurrection of an old thread discussion which started from a very similar casual comment...
Jackson will make a choice based on a number of factors, symbolism probably being very low on the list.
My previous point exactly. Well said.

There was not a completely consistent look throughout the Rings trilogy. As techniques improved, they were incorporated. To me the look improves dramatically through the 3 films mainly in the DI. I'm sure that all the smart people involved in Wellington will try to advance the quality of their work wherever possible.

Also is it just me but calling a DP someone's pet was a little harsh? I'm pretty sure that Mr Lesnie doesn't bring Peter Jackson his slippers; rather his hard work, eye and experience.

Exactly...I was fortunate to be on the NY set of kong and watched Andrew Lesnie & PJ working up close, he knows what he is doing and was very much in control of what he was doing, obviously a good team & alot of respect for each other.

Gah! That's even worse!

Just from pure speculation, I dont think Andrew Lesnie would be THAT interested in RED.

It just seems to me that cinematographers take delight in the way they know film and the control they have over it.

RED will still just seem "different", 4k or No-K.
Hi dvpixel,
If Peter was interested Andrew would be, they are sort of 'joined at
the brain', good pals and make creative decisions TOGETHER.
I could find out, Andrew's an old friend and worked for me as focus puller
many moons ago. Second thoughts, why bother. Whatever they shoot Red
or Film, or both, It'll look great.
Cheers

I don't see why he would. These budgets will be huge, and 35mm is actually still better than RED in terms of dynamic range and all that.

Hi Tom,
If Red could cut corners, speed up VFX work by shooting plates, elements
and dumping these for reference on set, they'd be into it.
Peter's quite innovative with this kind of thing.
Main unit/fleshtones would be film.

.......... sony have a share of warners....

Historically Sony's technology arm hasn't been allowed to interfere with matters relating to film. Sony pictures are generally shot on film, not digital. Whether they've made an exception in the case of Bond I don't know.

What I do know is that the side-by-side comparison of the Red they were testing didn't stand up well to the Kodak Vision 3 stock it was tested against.
