  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will Peter Jackson Use RED for "The Hobbit?"

I read somewhere that Andrew Lesnie made the decision to shoot film for "The Lovely Bones".... So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if he chose film for this one, assuming he's shooting it. I'm willing to be he is.

It would mean that he's not as big of a Red advocate as he has been reported to be. Soderbergh puts his actions where his mouth is.

I am confident that Peter Jackson enjoys watching and shooting things on/with Pixelvision... But that doesn't mean it would be right for these shows. Metallic Cassette tapes anyone?

total respect amigo, but Jackson is not a Red spokesman... He's a director, with a critical eye and an agenda which is not determined by the equipment he uses, but rather by the intended outcome (which will determine the equipment).

VIVA LA ROJA! but it is just a tool...

If the RED fits, use it.

If the cliche fits, use it too.

This is a false conclusion... we could not give them the features they needed on time. Peter, himself, is shooting RED on TLB, BTW. Andrew was keen for us to make the deadline... we just couldn't do it. Don't ask what they were...

Interesting Jim. Is The Lovely Bones going to be a hybrid film? Red One for effects shots and film for the rest?

Jim, I meant for 'The Hobbit', I can understand him not going for TLB now given the status of Red. Given that the Hobbit probably won't shoot for a year, it seems it'd be a shoo-in. My comments were meant to be very, very pro-Red. I can't imagine him choosing anything else for 'The Hobbit'.

The speculation sort of hinges around whether PJ will be Directing The Hobbit, does it not? So far no Director has been announced, and if it's not PJ then whoever it is will likely make their own decision about what they want to shoot on.

Let's not bank too much on the outcome. My guess is that Red is probably being considered, and we should be pretty excited about that.

Soderbergh tends to shoot lower budget "personal" films, Jackson will be shooting a mega-million dollar version of a famous book (filtered through his own personal version, I'm sure), with a lot of financial backing on his shoulders. Each project has its specific needs. Let the artists determine what that is.

I think it would make total sense to stick with the what they used on the LotR trilogy for a consistent look throughout. (Out of respect for Jim and the RED team, I will not cite Star Wars Episode 2 as an example of why this is important.)

After reconsidering, I would like to acknowledge that the statement I made here is not accurate all the time, for everyone- in fact, to me RED ONE symbolizes much more than just another camera, or piece of "gear". I am sure that Peter Jackson feels similarly and has been quoted saying as much, but a decision such as this can not be made from exclusive interests.

There was not a completely consistent look throughout the Rings trilogy. As techniques improved, they were incorporated. To me the look improves dramatically through the 3 films mainly in the DI. I'm sure that all the smart people involved in Wellington will try to advance the quality of their work wherever possible.

Also is it just me but calling a DP someone's pet was a little harsh? I'm pretty sure that Mr Lesnie doesn't bring Peter Jackson his slippers; rather his hard work, eye and experience.

Don't take that the wrong way at all. Its actually a complement man. Would you mind being the DP of choice for a big budget movie director? I certainly wouldn't mind.... If you look at Jackson's movies credits, you'll see many of the same names.

And just for the record, I'm a huge Lesnie fan :)

That's fine that the RED has symbolic value... but when it comes to deciding how to shoot a movie, practical values like, well, how the image looks matter more. Jackson will make a choice based on a number of factors, symbolism probably being very low on the list.

Good point. But then again, didn't Lucas shoot some Star Wars films digitally just to make a point? The films are heavy effects wise (so it wasn't a bad choice logistically, but common, they have more than enough money to just shoot and scan miles of film), but sometimes it feels like they did it just to make a point.

Either way, it'll be interesting so see what gets picked.

I don't think that Jackson has to same bug up his a-- to prove the superiority of digital over film as Lucas. Imagine how much worse "Lord of the Rings" would have looked if it were all shot on the F900...

Most directors, particularly the good ones, don't have "technological agendas" and thus tend to judge the merits of different technologies based on what it can accomplish for their particular movie, filtered through their own aesthetic and philosophical bias, of course.

Unlike Lucas, Jackson has never expressed problems with the look of film, in fact, he has a certain passion for older movies and how they look (ever see "Forgotten Silver"?). He doesn't see the future of movies as being entirely hyper-sharp and grainless necessarily. He will use RED if he thinks it adds something to his particular production, visually and practically, logistically. He's not constrained by costs so shooting in 35mm is completely open to him as an option.

He may also want the look of "The Hobbit" to match the look of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Or maybe not, maybe he wants the two Hobbit movies to stand apart visually, who knows. And who knows what his director and DP want to do, since Jackson is producing, not necessarily directing.

I seem to recall that PJ originally wanted to shoot the Lord of the Rings on 70mm, but relented because it would be too difficult for the FX guys to work at that resolution. Does that sound familiar to anyone else, or am I making all this up?

And all is in Peter Jackson's hands.

We just have to wait and see what is going to be.

All those speculation here it's just like a pure speculation.

And about Jim, if he can tell us more we would know it but if he can't that's it for now.

Keep cool.

If only he had been as concerned with making good movies as making a point.

Personally I love the "dirtier" look of Fellowship of the Ring. It made it feel like a movie from the 70s that had been dug up and unleashed on an unsuspecting public. There was a lot of flying by the seat of their pants while they made the first movie and it all came together into some real magic.

I guess I'm in the minority on this, but I was really disappointed in the other two stylistically. They got too "clean", and while it's a good thing that over time they started working out the kinks of the process, I think they over-polished it in the end, made it too slick and mechanical.

That being said, I don't see how using RED would necessarily be a bad thing, since as said above you bypass the need to scan the film before doing any digital work. You just have to commit to a serious degradation of the image in the D.I. to get certain "looks".

I know that what a lot of people love about it is how clean it is, and that's what I love too in terms of the raw footage. It'll make effects work much easier to do. But it's definitely my plan to take that "perfect" image and add some flaws to it. Even as a digital image, I'd like it to FEEL organic, and life's no fun without a little chaos.

If Jackson were to decide to use RED for The Hobbit, I would hope he felt the same way. I'd really like to see more Fellowship than Kong in those movies.

Personally I'm less bothered about what it's shot on as to why it's being made into two movies. It smacks of making as much money out of the book as possible and as our friend Han would say "I've got a bad feeling about this". I can't help but feel there is going to be a great amount of butchering of a book that I've always greatly enjoyed - Can anyone please point out a suitable point in the Hobbit that would make for a decent climax for a first installment? Sorry to drag the discussion off topic there :)
