  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will Over-Crank ever be possible on S35/FF Scarlet?

I have been debating between getting the S35 or the 2/3" Scarlet. The
only reason why I am still interested in the 2/3 scarlet is the over-crank/slowmotion frame rates.
So do you think in future builds of the S35/FF that the overcrank feature
will be made possible?

i think their is an overcrank already in place for the s35 and ff35 of up to 72 fps i think its only for a burst mode though. but depending how long you need to shoot that could suffice.

I think it's unlikely you'll see that added without buying a new brain.

Two reasons:

1) The Epics and Scarlets will apparently be based on ASIC architecture (as opposed to FPGA which the Red is built upon), which cannot be reprogrammed in the field - so firmware updates will, I believe be more limited in their scope than those of the R1. On the plus side, ASICs are much more powerful than FPGAs for the same cost (both financial and in terms of power and heat considerations).

2) Jim has stated before that "real framerates cost real money", and that this is where a considerable quantity of the extra money you spend on an Epic system goes.

I would imagine, however, that a brain down the line will offer higher fps shooting for a lower cost as technology advances. Also, with Red involved, I would imagine it might be relatively soon, compared to other manufacturers...

It will be interesting though to see what the duration of the burst mode is for the S35 - if you've got more than 20 seconds or so that will be very usable for indie productions.

Also, bear in mind that you can always hire an S35 Epic brain (or a 2/3" Scarlet, for that matter), use the accessories you've got for the Scarlet and get as higher framerate as you like whenever you need - that's the beauty of modularity! So unless you're planning on shooting tons of overcranked footage, I wouldn't necessarily worry too much about that unless the burst mode turns out to be really short lived like 5 secs or something. I would be quite seriously surprised if that were the case, though...

Cheers,
Dom.

I don't think so. More FPS need more Horsepower of the CPU. And that can't be switched I think. But yeah, rent a matching Epic Brain and to all overcrank stuff after another to save days. If you, like me plan on using overcranking really often grab a 2/3" (or two for 3D overcranked)
